Five Lovable Big Screen Couples

Grease - Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta

Love is in air in February - or at least, it’s all over the entertainment industry. Retailers vie for our money, love-soaked television episodes hope for big ratings. The sappier the better, because doesn’t romance put everyone in a spending mood? In Hollywood, love stories are popular all year ‘round - but which lovable big screen couples continue to endure when other romances seems to fade? Some leading ladies and big screen hunks seem to have more chemistry than the average pair, and we love to watch them fall in love again and again.

Let’s look back at five lovable big screen couples, and see what happens when pretend romance is done right.

Olivia Newton-John and - They were both in their twenties when they filmed Grease, but they were the perfect High School couple. The enduring tale of bad-boy-falls-for-good-girl is perhaps best represented with rollicking music and 50s-era fashion - or at least, it’s more enjoyable that way. It’s all thanks to Sandy and Danny, who are so very lovable together.

and Leonardo DiCaprio - Together, they can do no wrong. Whether they’re falling in love on a sinking ship or staying in love through a sinking marriage, we want to see them in love - and isn’t that what makes romance great?

Julia Roberts and - They don’t sing and dance like some couples, and their on-screen love wasn’t forged in tragedy, but there’s something magnetic about this pair - you just don’t want to look away. These fine actors have turned the will-they-won’t-they storyline into an art, and I think it’s high time they do another flick together.

and Tom Hanks - Whether they’re exchanging mails in a 1940s remake, meeting on the Empire State Building in a 1950s remake or just battling volcanoes together, there’s something impossibly charismatic about Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks as a big screen pair. She’s adorable, he’s got that Every Man charm and together they’re one of the best big screen couples ever to meet in film.

Gone With the Wind - Rhett Butler and Vivien Leigh

Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable - They only did one film together, but their epic romance lives on through generations. Rhett Butler’s parting shot to Scarlett O’Hara is still considered by the AFI to be the best line in the long history of film, and their love story encompasses everything that’s bittersweet about romance. They are the best of the best when it comes to big screen couples.
