Oprah Reveals She Was Turned Down for Doubt

In the first few weeks of 2009, Oprah Winfrey has revealed a great deal to her audience. Not only is mad at herself for falling off the weight wagon (again), she was once recently told “No.”
On Tuesday’s episode of her talk show, Winfrey told recent Golden Globe nominee Meryl Streep some surprising news. She asked director John Patrick Shanley to audition for Meryl’s film, Doubt.
Read More Oprah - who has openly talked about her history with sexual abuse - hoped to play Mrs. Miller, the role Viola Davis may possibly receive an Oscar nod for. (Davis stars as mother whose son may/may not have been molested.) The Color Purple actress told Streep she wanted the part for two reasons: to work opposite Meryl once in her lifetime and to repeat three words from the film (“only ‘til June”). Unfortunately for Winfrey, Shandley gave her “all the reasons why it would be ‘No’.” Although she did not specifically disclose his reasons, I’m guessing it’s because she would have been too big (no pun intended) for the part? If you’ve seen the movie, tell us what you think. Could Oprah have handled that role?
