Remake News: The Orphanage, Twilight Zone and More

The Orphanage: One of the most haunting movies I’ve seen in the past few years is being given an English-language redo. The Orphanage, the 2007 Spanish film from director Juan Antonio Bayona, will now be in the hands of Larry Fessenden. Guillermo del Toro, the producer on the original project, will serve the same role on this version. Guillermo also assisted Larry with the new script.

The Secret of Nimh: Ratatouille and The Tale of Despereaux have paved the way for another story about rodents. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, the 1971 children’s book, was already the basis for 1982’s The Secret of NIMH. Now Paramount has tasked Neil Burger (The Illusionist) with adapting the tale about a group of lab rats. It’s not known whether the studio is planning a live-action and/or animated feature.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: You can’t keep good turtles down. Two years after an animated version comes news of another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles entry. John Fusco, the writer behind the Jet Li movie The Forbidden Kingdom, will be responsible for developing the live-action update. No director has yet been assigned to the 2011 release.

The Twilight Zone: It’s time to take a trip back into time. The next stop? The Twilight Zone. Leonardo DiCaprio’s production banner, Appian Way, is teaming up with Warner Bros. for a remake of the classic television program. Unlike the theatrical version released in 1983, this project will be penned by a single writer (The Astronaut Wife‘s Rand Ravich). Rod Serling’s anthology series aired on television from 1959-1964.

MacGruber: So will it be MacGruber or MacGyver? Sounds like it could be both. Although the Saturday Night Live sketches helped spark plans for a MacGyver update, it also raised interest in a spoof version. Will Forte and Kristen Wiig are set to reprise their roles from the skits while Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer are in talks to join the movie. Lorne Michaels will produce.
