Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau Talk Iron Man 2
UPDATE: Thanks to one of those smarter people who actually brought a camera, The Game Jerk has posted a video of the Q&A that you can check out after the jump.
Although I have continuously kicked myself repeatedly for not bringing a camera last night, I was still at least able to mentally hold on to the great moments witnessed last night at a special screening of Iron Man. While the director was already scheduled to appear for a live commentary at Santa Monica’s Aero Theater, fans of Marvel’s first self-financed film were in for an even better treat when Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr., showed up at the last moment.
Because of the fact that he had not recorded a commentary for the upcoming DVD, director Jon Favreau was quite exuberant over the fact that he was able to do so in person (also because he was not obligated to be politically correct).
Throughout the movie, the actor-turned-director pointed out and confirmed various scenes which hinted at both The Avengers movie (visible S.H.I.E.L.D. logos) and the sequel (he noted that the terrorist cell in the movie is merely one branch of Mandarin’s group).
Downey served to be more entertaining during the commentary than his character in Iron Man, which I didn’t think was possible.
While I initially questioned a few narcissistic remarks that demanded we all pay close attention to a particular scene he was in, I later figured that we should really not expect much less from such a humorous individual who portrayed the Howard Hughes-based Tony Stark.
During the commentary, both director and actor listed numerous instances in the film where the scene was either improvised or written days (sometimes even mere hours) prior to filming. Favreau also noted how much he fought for certain liberties, likening his creation more to an independent movie more than the traditional superhero flicks (i.e. Spider-Man, Fantastic Four).
Afterwards, both Jon and Robert stayed for Q&A, where they again confirmed the sequel (it has not been formally announced yet), which is currently being written by Tropic Thunder writer Justin Theroux, whom Robert continuously lauded.
