Mission Impossible 3

Here’s the latest scoop on the sequel buzz spreading across Hollywood:

Mission Impossible: Even though he could do just about anything he wants these days, Star Trek‘s J.J. Abrams will be returning to familiar territory. Three years after the debut of MI:3, the director has agreed to reteam with Tom Cruise on a fourth installment. (Apparently the actor wasn’t listening when I said he should stay away from this project.) Although they are both only listed as producers at this point, things could change for the busy men once a script is finalized. Paramount is currently aiming for a 2011 release.

Indiana Jones: Although Kingdom of the Crystal Skull left many disappointed, Shia LaBeouf has confirmed that a fourth sequel is being worked on. In an interview with the BBC, the actor revealed that director Steven Spielberg has “cracked a story on it” and that they are “gearing that up.” No word on a possible target start date. LaBeouf is about to start work on another sequel—the one for Wall Street.

The Haunting in Connecticut: If there’s anything we’ve learned from the Real Housewives series, it’s this: Drama can be found in anywhere. After a successful turnout for the spring horror release, the producers will now be shifting their attention to new leads in a new zip code. The Haunting in Georgia will be helmed by Cabin Fever 2‘s Ti West.

Ghostbusters: Despite confirmed interest from the franchise’s veterans, Harold Ramis says a third film is not 100% a go. The actor/writer/director insists the comedy will only be made if the script is good enough. (Apparently that was not a prerequisite for the first sequel.) Ramis, who recently directed Year One, has been working with a team on the Ghostbusters 3 script. “Hopefully the story will feel enough like the old one to revive and sustain people’s interests, but new enough to deliver some surprises,” he said.

The Hobbit: A trio of veterans are now lined up for the already-announced prequels. Director Guillermo del Toro recently told the BBC that actor Hugo Weaving will be returning to the franchise to play Elrond. Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf) will also appear in the features to be released in 2011 and 2012.
