Sex and the City: Boom in Frame?

I sincerely hoped this issue was only present at my screening and could be blamed on a lazy projectionist not wanting to work the graveyard shift for two theaters jam-packed with estrogen - but according to my Google search, I’m afraid not.
At the midnight showing of the new Sex and the City movie at the Waterford Lakes Plaza in Orlando, FL, viewers were awed by not just the return of the Fab Four, but by several occasions of boom microphones slipping into frame during the film. At one point, Chris Noth even walks right up to what is clearly the top end of a Kino light or a flag on a C-stand.
While not only killing vital plot moments in the film with the level of distraction this caused, it begs the question of how something like that could even make it onto the final print of a film with such a huge budget and profile.
I’ve already resolved to rent the film as soon as it’s out just to make sure that it was some sort of framing issue with the projection (and because it was fabulous), but after my quick google search, I fear the worst, as other moviegoers nationwide seem to have witnessed something similar. Feel free to weigh in on your own experiences in comments.

Boom mics in the shot? My God, I almost started COUNTING! I intend to go back and see it again, but I’m guessing that the total numbers of separate incidents is close to 20! As for the quality of the film, vis-a-vis the HBO series, I disagree. If the series is a 9 on a 1-10 scale, the movie was at best a 5. VERY SLOW and LONG! Not be confused with BIG!

My daughter and I planned this event for weeks since we both were huge fans. We went Friday night and at first, it was great. Then the boom mics began. The audience laughed it up, thinking it was just a slip in one frame….but lo and behold, it appeared again and again. What it did for us was ruin the affect of the story and really deflated the evening. We began looking up at the top of the screen rather than concentrating on the movie. I pray they pull this version, edit it, and re-release it. All in all, the movie story was OK….a little corny.

I saw Sex and the City The Movie yesterday and saw at least 30 scenes with Boom Microphones drifting above the actors’ heads. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN??? I really like the story, and the actor’s gave it their all, but the microphone intrusion, frankly, ruined the movie for me and my friends. It almost became a parody, with the audience laughing during serious/emotional scenes. This makes me sad, because I have been waiting so long for this movie.

I saw Sex and the City movie yesterday and was completely disappointed by the repeated appearances of the boom mike. I go to see movies at a movie theater for entertainment and the ‘escapism’ element of the movie theater experience. The repetitious boom mikes in so many of the scenes in this movie were like big buckets of cold water reminding me that I was simply watching an acting troupe act. I demanded a refund of my hard-earned money from the theater manager (in Goldsboro, NC) and plan on spending my money on a movie that has been professionally edited. Shame on the movie editors of Sex and the City. One bad apple in that production spoiled the whole darn bunch.

Mostly enjoyed the movie. Needless to say I could have held out for a matinee ticket if I had known that damn microphone was going to make so many appearances. At one point the frames got screwey but no one really wanted to leave to get someone to help. It’s really a shame how they had an employee “chat” with us before they started the movie about how we should all be quiet and silence our cell phones. Too bad they couldn’t give us a heads up on that stupid mic. Really took us all out of the movie.

I noticed the boom mikes also, but I can also explain how it happened. “Sex and the City” was filmed on 35mm film because its cheaper. To make the widescreen frame, they usually crop some from the top and bottom in order to get the right ratio. Whoever cropped the SatC movie only cropped the bottom. So what we’re getting is 60% of the frame we’re supposed to be seeing (did no one else notice that you couldn’t see the table in the Mexican restaurant?) and the rest of the frame above their heads is space that was supposed to be deleted. And this isn’t just your theaters. This is a problem with the master print coming from the distributor.
I’ve heard of this problem in DVDs (Back to the Future 2 and 3, for example), but never for theatrical films.

I saw it Saturday morning. I would guess the boom mics were in about the last 2/3 of the movie. The theater made an announcement that it was in “1-3 scenes,” but it was much, much more. In addition there were scenes that were so low on the screen their mouths were not showing. Also, you can clearly see reflectors and other equipment at the top of the screen in several entire scenes. The theater said this was the print and not their projection. My sister saw it at another theater and says she didn’t notice. I don’t think you could miss it, so it must have been this one theater. (This is Los Angeles, you would think the studio would support their own local theaters, not that it should happen anywhere, but still…)

It’s more than just your theater Jenny, because I saw it in a small town in Indiana and the print was bad. I’m guessing that there are a huge amount of bad prints out there. They should have been recalled and destroyed, not shipped out all across the country.

I am a projectionist at an independent movie theatre that picked up Sex and the City for a 2-week run. Let me just say, that the Sex and the City 35mm print has been a complete pain to deal with. It is known as a “full frame flat” movie, meaning that there are no black bars on the bottom or top of the frames to hide the boom mics. When you receive a film like this, it is up to the projectionist to make sure that the film is perfectly in frame, otherwise the audience will see boom mics. While seeing mics on the screen is completely the projectionist’s fault, this print is just impossible. The problem is that the tops of the characters heads wind up being so close to the boom mics at the top of the screen, that oftentimes the very tops of their heads are cut off in order to keep all the mics from appearing on screen. Additionally, there is a terrible reel change at reel 3, where the frame is completely black except for a tiny sliver of light. There is absolutely no way of knowing how to correctly splice that frame to the end of reel 2 without having first seen the film with a keen eye watching for that spot. Let me say, that these are all technically projectionist errors, but the studio seemed to make it as difficult as possible to screen the film perfectly. Never have I experienced such inconvenience with a print. I hope this helps.

John, finally a comment from someone who really knows what the problem is. No offense to the rest of you who commented! It puzzles me how the producers of the film would want to make it so difficult and create a VERY negative “buzz” for this film. Just sloppy work I assume.

Fred, I agree, this is sloppy work. Studios produce prints like this because it is “tradition.” As a 35mm projectionist, I have complete respect for tradition with film. However, in my opinion, no prints should ever leave the studios without black bars at the tops and bottoms of the frames. Everything will be going digital eventually, so I guess the point might be moot.

I’m a huge fan of the series and I saw this movie today in the Fiji Islands and guess what? Same problem. Boom mikes, reflectors etc throughout one particular screen with Carrie and Big… it really does break one’s suspension of disbelief that we are watching characters and reminded me that I was watching something staged - a movie. While it didn’t exactly ruin the entire experience, it certainly took a lot away. How can they get away this?

I can’t believe no one got it. The boom mics are SUPPOSED to be there periodically … this is Sex And The City THE MOVIE … the mics are a tongue-in-cheek way of saying this is THE MOVIE and not simply an episode from the series. I mean, c’mon … you don’t REALLY think an almost $100 million big-name move production would make this kind of a mistake, do you?! Think outside the box people!

Boom mics were thoroughly annoying/ I saw them again and again throughout the film. For the most part, I liked the movie. The mics gave it a cheesy feel, and the story went on for too long. The part that I liked least was the ending. I thought for sure Carrie would stay true to herself. Not so…..

Saw the flick at the Rutland Plaze. Boom mikes everywhere. It was laughable.

If I could sit down with SJP for coffee (and I AM available to meet her in NYC this week) I would ask her HOW she could DEBASE such a great show with such sloppy work? Those of us who loved the series are “heartbroken” with the amateurish work that has been created.

Not sure if you’ll get a reply notification for this, but what I did if I had a film with black ends on the reels (WALL-E comes to mind), I find the last frame I can tell 100% then match it up with a piece of leader tape that is on my makeup table. Then in this case I would find the last frame with the silver light and cut it where the frame line matches on the leader tape (if that makes sense).
I also believe Hellboy 2 was full-frame flat.

I’m no expert, but why can’t films be cropped at the editing stage so that there is no chance of the boom mike being seen even if the film is not framed perfectly? It seems to me that the filmmakers are putting way too much faith in those teenagers running the projectors. Or is there some technical reason this isn’t possible?
