To be honest, comedy king Kevin James and hilarious SNL success Adam Sandler could have united on any movie project and it would be a hit. But, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is a great way for the duo to make their screen debut as a pair – and just what audiences need in the middle of a summer that has so far been filled with lots of movie CGI, large-scale adventures, and not-so-hot comedies.

Kevin James (the King of Queens) and Adam Sandler play two Brooklyn firemen named (who could guess) Chuck and Larry. James plays Larry, a widower, who can’t get his kids listed on his life insurance policy – at least, not until he comes up with the domestic partner idea that leads audiences into a world of laughs. The fabulous Dan Akroyd plays their boss, who isn’t at all fooled by the seemingly homosexual tendencies of two of his men. Steve Buscemi turns up to inspect their shared home, while Larry attempts to thwart the sexual advances of the (very male) mail carrier. As Chuck, Sandler gets stuck in the “gay boyfriend” role with mega-hottie Jessica Biel, who plays attorney Alex McDonough.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry takes a light, low-key approach to gay comedy, avoiding complex social issues even while it throws the issue of gay marriage into the mainstream. The potential political hotbed is well-cooled by airy jokes and a very non-confrontational approach that should keep even the hard-core Republicans happy – if anything ever will. For the most part, the film takes the easy way out of dealing with the issue by relying on a lot of cheap gags and funny jokes – but that’s just what audiences want to see, anyway. With Sandler and James leading the way, could this movie be anything other than box office gold?
