Box Office Breakdown: ‘Man of Steel’ Soars Above ‘This Is the End’

Zack Snyder's latest Superman reboot, Man of Steel, was one of the most anticipated films of this summer - and it definitely delivered for Warner Bros.
Bringing in $113 million from the weekend earned the Christopher Nolan-produced flick the record opening for June, beating out Toy Story 3 ($110.3 million). Coming in second with $20.5 million was the debut of the Seth Rogen apocalyptic comedy This Is the End. Now You See Me stayed put at number three with $10.3 million while Fast & Furious 6 fell two spots to number four with $9.4 million. The Purge took the greatest dive, falling from the top spot last week to number five with $8.2 million.

Gene Wilder: ‘Willy Wonka’ Remake Is an Insult

Although it's been 8 years since Tim Burton's adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory hit theaters, Gene Wilder - who portrayed the title role in the 1972 adaptation of the book Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory -is still rather upset that it was made.
The 80 year-old screen veteran made an apperance at an event in New York, where he was asked his opinion of Burton's take of the classic children's tale. "I think it's an insult. It's probably Warner Bros.' insult," Wilder said.
While the Young Frankenstein actor didn't necessarily have good things to say about Burton, he did compliment his frequent collaborator, Johnny Depp: "Johnny Depp, I think, is a good actor, but I don't care for that director. He's a talented man, but I don't care for him doing stuff like he did."
Wilder may not be acting in Hollywood anymore, but he has recently taken to writing; his second book, Something to Remember You By, is due in bookstores soon.

Though it might not have made as big of a killing at the box office as Iron Man 3 or Star Trek Into Darkness, The Purge made it to the top of its box office weekend with $36.3 million, successfully bumping Fast & Furious 6 off its two-week stint at number one.
The latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise garnered $19.7 million, while the magician thriller Now You See Me also fell one spot to number three with $19.5 million. For the return of Wedding Crashers duo Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, their newest comedy The Internship didn't fair too well, debuting at number four with $18.1 million. Epic stayed put at number five with $12.1 million.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Now You See Me,’ ‘After Earth’ Trail Behind

Neither magic tricks nor an futuristic-yet-abysmal Will Smith vehicle were enough to bring Fast & Furious 6 down from its number one position. The car thriller held its own in its second week at the theaters with $34.5 million while newcomers Now You See Me and After Earth just couldn't make the cut to the top spot.
The Louis Leterrier-helmed Now You See Me placed second with $28 million while M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth debuted with $27 million (even removing Shyamalan's name from promotional material for the film couldn't guarantee a better debut). Epic stayed put at number four in its second week with $16.4 million while Star Trek Into Darkness fell two spots to number five.

More folks preferred thrill to laughs this Memorial Day weekend, pushing Fast & Furious 6 to number one at the box office over The Hangover: Part III.
The car-centric thriller garnered $98.5 million, while the finale to The Hangover series placed second with $42.4 million (both films debuted this weekend). Star Trek Into Darkness fell two spots from number one, having only earned $38 million. The animated family film Epic also hit theaters for the first time this weekend, placing fourth with $34.2 million. Finally, Iron Man 3 placed fifth with $19.4 million, having dropped two places from last week.

Though Star Trek Into Darkness didn't hit theaters as impressively as Iron Man 3 did two weeks ago, it still fared well garnering $70.5 million.
Despite holding the top spot for two consecutive weeks, Iron Man 3 came in second with $35.1 million while both The Great Gatsby and Pain and Gain also fell one spot to numbers three and four with $23.4 million and $3.1 million, respectively. The Croods, however, fared well, moving up two spots from number seven to number five with $2.7 million.

Despite its buzz, glamour, and the return of Leonardo DiCaprio in a Baz Luhrman production, The Great Gatsby clearly stood no chance against Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man this weekend.
Iron Man 3 took in an impressive $72.4 million, securing its second consecutive week at the top while The Great Gatsby debuted with $51.1 million. Pain and Gain fell to number three with just $5 million and Tyler Perry Presents Peeples earned $4.8 million in its first week, marking it as number four in the box office chart. The baseball drama 42 fell two spots with its $4.6 million take, rounding out the top five.

Iron Man 3 broke box office records this weekend, earning $175.3 million - the second biggest opening after The Avengers (which also stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man), which took in $207.4 million when it debuted.
Last week's number one film, Pain and Gain, dropped one spot with $7.6 million while 42 stayed put at number three with $6.2 million. The sci-fi Tom Cruise vehicle Oblivion fell two spots to number four with $5.7 million while the number five spot went to The Croods with $4.2 million.
