Sacha Baron Cohen Joins Les Miserables

Sacha Baron Cohen is set to star in Les Miserables.
The Hugo actor - who is best known for comedy roles in films including Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and Bruno - will play Monsieur Thenardier in the forthcoming musical, which will be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Tom Hooper.
Sacha rounds of a huge cast for the film, which includes Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Russell Crowe. Glee actress Lea Michele is also in the frame for a part, playing Eponine, although Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson are also said to be vying for the character.
Tom - who won an Academy Award last year for his work on The King's Speech - recently confessed the movie would be shot in 2-D instead of 3-D, although he had flirted with the idea.

Les Miserables to Be 2-D

Les Miserables will be shot in 2-D so viewers don't "physically struggle."
Director Tom Hooper - who won an Oscar for his work on The King's Speech - was "tempted" to use 3-D technology in the forthcoming blockbuster but decided against it because he wanted to make a film that would "connect with everyone."
"I can definitely announce it's good old-fashioned 2-D. I did test 3-D and I was very tempted - I think it is a very interesting new form. One of the things I'm most proud of with The King's Speech is how it managed to connect with everyone, whether you're eight or 80 years old. So I slightly worry with 3-D that some people will physically struggle with it. If you have a certain type of eyesight it can be more demanding than watching a normal movie. With a two-and-a-half hour film, I didn't want to make something that anyone might think 'That's not for me, because I don't like the medium.'"

Box Office Breakdown: Breaking Dawn Sinks Teeth Into Competition

Neither the classic Jim Henson characters of The Muppets nor the Black Friday events were enough to sway the effect that The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 has on audiences everywhere! The vampire love story took the top spot at the box office for the second week in a row, pulling in $41.6 million for the long Thanksgiving weekend -- bringing its box office total to $220.8 million.
Amy Adams and Jason Segel claimed the #2 spot at $29.2 million with The Muppets in its first week, bumping Happy Feet Two down to #3 with $13.4 million in its second week. The animated holiday film Arthur Christmas and Martin Scorcese's latest film Hugo took fourth and fifth with $12 million and $11.3 million, respectively.

After catching a sneak peek last month, the first full-length trailer for Disney's upcoming Muppet movie hit the web a day earlier than planned. Borrowing a little from some of the most memorable trailers from the past couple of years, The Muppets trailer promises lots of music, action, romance, comedy, and... an electrocuted muppet.
The film, which stars Amy Adams and Jason Segel, hits theaters on November 23.

Willow Smith to Star in Annie Remake

Somebody cue Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons, because we just discovered the Worst. Remake. Ever…and, it hasn’t even been made yet. Take a good look at Will Smith’s pretty daughter Willow. Now, imagine her with red hair.
Actually, the red hair is probably the first thing that’s going to go in the new Annie remake, and that’s only one of the reasons this is the worst idea we’ve ever heard. Willow Smith will take on the iconic role in a new film that’s being produced by -- guess who? -- her daddy’s company Overbrook Entertainment.
Our knee-jerk dislike of the remake idea (the original film, made in 1982, has long been filed in our Untouchable Classics category) probably won’t affect the Smiths, who may soon officially change their surname to Midas. After Jaden Smith raked in more than $300 million in his Karate Kid remake that featured absolutely no actual karate, there’s nothing this family can’t pull off.
Annie is the story of a redheaded orphan whose life is changed when she is adopted by the fantastically rich Daddy Warbucks. Carol Burnett defined the role of the mean orphanage owner who helps concoct a scam to steal Annie back from Warbucks, which eventually fails. The movie, like the Broadway musical that preceded it, is peppered with sensational songs.
And perhaps now, Willow’s “Whip My Hair.” Re-using old scripts is awesome.

Barbra Streisand in Talks to Remake Gypsy

Sources say that Barbra Streisand has been approached to join the cast in the upcoming remake of Gypsy. Yes, dreams really do come true.
Streisand would play Rose, a role whose songs were written specifically for Broadway star Ethel Merman. Rosalind Russell, who was not known for her powerful singing voice, starred as Rose in the critically-acclaimed 1962 movie. In the film, Natalie Wood played the title role.
There’s no word on who could potentially play the character in the new version of the film.
Reports say that Barbra is working closely with producers in casting matters. Their choice for Rose’s love interest/talent manage Herbie? Tom Hanks.
Betcha didn’t see that one coming.

Real Burlesque Performer Not Pleased With Cher Movie

“What do I do in my show you wouldn’t see in that movie? Burlesque!” These words are from real-life burleque performer Kiki Valentine, who’s none too thrilled with the much-hyped, Golden Globe-nominated flick starring Cher and Christina Aguilera.
Valentine has been performing at the Ella Lounge in New York City for the last two years … but now, she’s quitting because of her unhappiness with the flick named after her art form.

2011 Golden Globe Nominations (Film)

Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and Blair Underwood helped kick off the 2010-11 awards season Tuesday morning by formally announcing the latest round of Golden Globe contenders.
In the film category, The King's Speech -- starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush -- lead all nominees with a total of six nods. (The Fighter and The Social Network tied for second with six each.)
Although the Academy Awards will not necessarily mirror the choices made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, there were some notable inclusions/omissions in this year's list of Globe nominees:
- Justin Timberlake did not earn an acting nomination for The Social Network.
- Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp were both recognized for their work in The Tourist, a movie that has been panned by critics. (BTW - they were nominated in the "Comedy" category.)
- Speaking of Depp, he will be running against himself. (He was also nominated for Alice in Wonderland.)
- Wall Street's Michael Douglas has now received another Golden Globe nod for his role as Gordon Gekko. (He won for Best Actor in 1987.)
- Gwyneth Paltrow did not earn a nomination for her role in Country Strong.
- 127 Hours was left out of the Best Movie category -- so was True Grit. (The Coen Brothers western received zero nominations.)
The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards -- hosted again by Ricky Gervais -- will air Jan. 16 on NBC.

Box Office Breakdown: Deathly Hallows Avoids Getting Tangled

Tangled's tresses weren't quite long enough to get past the Deathly Hallows last weekend.
Despite a $48.8 million debut ($68.7 million since Wednesday), Disney's latest animated feature found itself in a tight race. The film starring Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi landed firmly into second place -- approximately $300,000 shy of two-time winner Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Burlesque, featuring Christina Aguilera and Cher, rang up $11.9 million in ticket sales and a fourth-place finish. Although that figure isn't exactly something to brag about, it does represent Cher's biggest opening to date.
Promises of nudity couldn't get Love and Other Drugs into the Top 5. The Anne Hathaway/Jake Gyllenhaal movie earned less than $10 million and a sixth place debut. Meanwhile, Faster -- starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton -- grossed $8.5 million for seventh place.
