Planet of the Apes: The apes will rise again in 2011 when Fox delivers a Planet of the Apes prequel. The movie - currently titled Rise of the Apes - will have photo-realistic apes incorporated into the cautionary tale. The story, written by The Relic‘s Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, will explain how genetic engineering experimentation lead to the apes’ development. The Rupert Wyatt-directed film will be set in present-day San Francisco.

Ridley Scott Opted Against 3-D Robin Hood

Although had the opportunity to make Robin Hood a 3-D adventure, the Oscar-nominated director decided against it.

“I could have got it in as a 3-D version of . But it’s not a big deal. It’s all in how you’re going to fill the frame,” the 73-year-old said.

Ridley, though, will be using the technology for his next Alien film - even if he’s not enthusiastic about it. “You are going to grit your teeth and light it not the way you like, and then later you are going to have to repaint it,” Scott told the Daily Record newspaper. “, when you think about it, is almost completely an animated movie.”

Even though the Alien 3D prequel will be highly-anticipated, Ridley has no interest in updating any of his other projects like Thelma and Louise, Gladiator or Blade Runner. “I’ve been contracted but don’t want to. I’d rather use the energy for something else,” he stated.

Remake News: Godzilla, Popeye and More


Godzilla: You didn’t think Godzilla would go down without another fight, did ya? Legendary Pictures has announced that it plans to resurrect the giant creature in 2012 with help from Warner Bros. The film, which will not be a sequel to the 1998 version starring Matthew Broderick, will “pay respects” to the 1954 outing. A director has not yet been named.

Tim Burton Foresees Bad 3-D in Our Future

Although he’s pleased with how his most recent entry turned out, director predicts we’ll be seeing a wave of bad 3-D films in theaters soon.

“It’s true that 3-D is being hyped at the moment. It was different when we started working on a few years ago. I’m glad I started using it early on and wasn’t forced to shoot a film in 3-D at all costs, because everyone’s doing it now. We’re surely going to see a lot of bad 3-D films in the near future, because Hollywood cannibalizes every recipe for success. That’s how the industry works,” Burton stated.

Despite his concerns at 3-D being overused, Tim finds the technology thrilling. “It’s a great thing when you use it as a technical tool and not as a wonder weapon,” he added.

Remake News: Conan the Barbarian, The First Star and More


Conan the Barbarian: Jason Momoa is the man who will likely step into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s old loincloth. The Stargate Atlantis hunk is currently in talks to front a reboot of Conan the Barbarian, a 1982 entry starring California’s current governor. In the actioner, Momoa, as the title character, would avenge the deaths of his father and tribe. (It’s a role Twilight‘s Kellan Lutz was also vying for.) Filming will begin this March in Bulgaria.

007 May Come in 3D

Daniel Craig as James BondThe next installment in 007 franchise has reportedly been delayed because the bosses want to take advantage of the latest technology.

“The 23rd Bond movie has been put back a few months and that has given them the time to prepare to film it in 3-D. Everyone involved in the project is really excited because it will take the franchise in a new direction,” an insider said.

The as-yet-untitled project had already been delayed due to issues surrounding the impending sale of MGM Studios.

“Our timeline’s a little up in the air, so we have to be flexible. We just don’t know enough about the situation to comment, but we know it’s uncertain,” producer Michael G. Wilson previously stated.

Sequel News: Zombieland, Jackass and More


Here’s the latest scoop on the sequel buzz spreading across Hollywood:

Zombieland: Prepare for another attack of the walking dead—this time in 3D. Sony has already greenlighted a follow-up to Zombieland, the recent comedy starring Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg. “Everyone had fun watching (the first) Zombieland; making it a more visceral experience can only make it better,” producer Gavin Polone said. “I don’t think you want to see Ordinary People in 3-D. But Zombieland is clearly one movie that will benefit from (the technique).” Director Ruben Fleischer has been confirmed for the sequel while discussions are being had with the two main stars.

Box Office Breakdown: Christmas Carol Wins, Precious Soars

We’re still weeks away from Thanksgiving, but theatergoers already have Christmas on their minds.

, the umpteenth version of the Charles Dickens tale, brought the story back to life with a visual rendition. Robert Zemeckis’ latest holiday creation earned over $30 million, surpassing Polar Express’ open by $7 million. Although the Jim Carrey film didn’t come close to its reported $180 million budget, Carol still has weeks to go before Avatar takes over 3D screens.

Meanwhile, a film with no bells or whistles made an impact just outside the Top 10. , Sundance’s Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize winner, broke a record while in limited release. The 12th place entry averaged a whopping $104,025 this weekend over only 18 theaters. That’s the largest per screen average for any film opening in more than 10 locations.
