Box Office Breakdown: How to Train Your Dragon Soars to #1

Jay Baruchel may be dating a girl out of his league, but he’s now got a dragon under his command.
Friday’s premiere of How to Train a Dragon had both Baruchel and Gerard Butler pulling double-duty over the weekend. The animated feature easily surpassed both Out of My League, Bounty Hunter and - most importantly - the reigning champ (Alice in Wonderland) to take the win with a $43.7 million take.
Unfortunately, even higher ticket prices couldn’t lift the 3-D feature past a previous Dreamworks entry. Last March, Monsters vs. Aliens towered over the competition with a $59.3 million bow.
Meanwhile, Hot Tub Time Machine - the weekend’s only other new wide release - warmed up to a $14 million debut and a third-place finish.

Box Office Breakdown: Wimpy Kid Bests the Bounty Hunter

Two out of three ain’t bad.
Although Hollywood has yet to present a real threat to Alice in Wonderland, two studios this weekend made strong attempts. Diary of a Wimpy Kid, based on a series of Jeff Kinney books, proved there was more than enough room for kid-friendly fare at the box office. Fox’s adaptation unfolded to over $22 million in ticket sales - approximately $12 million shy of the three-time winner, but enough for second place.
The Bounty Hunter - starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler - also managed to nab a decent bounty for itself during this frame. Sony’s critically-panned comedy grossed over $20 million, falling just short of Diary.
Meanwhile, Repo Men, Friday’s only other wide release, came a distant fourth with $6.1 million.

Box Office Breakdown: Alice in Wonderland in the Green Zone

The combined forces of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass could not earn Green Zone the green.
Although the film nearly matched The Hurt Locker‘s total domestic gross ($15.7 million) in just one weekend, Green became the latest war-based film to open to underwhelming numbers. The movie, which debuted to $14.3 million and cost approximately $100 million to produce, also came nowhere near Damon and Greengrass’ last project together. (The Bourne Ultimatum opened to $69.3 million in 2007.)
Meanwhile, Alice in Wonderland continued along its fantastic journey. The movie, which has now taken in over $209 million domestically, has officially become one of Disney’s Top 20 all-time entries.

Jolie, Eastwood and Ryan Talk About Changeling
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Universal, Drama, Mystery, Period,
Last night at the New York Film Festival, Angelina Jolie hit the interview circuit for her first time in months. After speaking briefly about the twins, the actress spoke to Entertainment Tonight about why she got involved with Changeling.
In the movie, Angelina plays a woman in 1928 whose child goes missing. Although the LAPD claims to have found her son, she insists they have brought back the wrong person. Despite the drama’s difficult subject matter, the Oscar-nominee said the script (based on a true story) was simply something she couldn’t get out of her head. It also meant a lot that the role reminded Jolie of her mother. (Marcheline Bertrand died in early 2007.)
After the jump, you can see that interview along with discussions with director Clint Eastwood, co-star Amy Ryan and producer Brian Grazer.

2008 Academy Award Nominations
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Picturehouse, DreamWorks, FOCUS, Disney, Fox Searchlight, MGM, Miramax, Lionsgate, Picturehouse, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Warner Independant Films, Weinstein Company, Action, Adaptation, Animation, Drama, Family, Foreign, Independent, Period, Political, Romance, Comedy, Awards, Celeb News, Celebrity Gossip, Lists,
The nominations for the 80th Annual Academy Awards were announced bright and early Tuesday morning from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Assuming the ceremony goes on as scheduled, you can see the live broadcast Sunday, February 24th on ABC.
Notable additions/omissions from today’s announcement:
- Based on the major categories alone, it looks like Michael Clayton may be the frontrunner. It received six nominations.
- Aside from one nod each in the Best Supporting Actor category, both Into the Wild and Charlie Wilson’s War were virtually shut out from the top prizes.
- Sweeney Todd - winner for Best Comedy/Musical at the Golden Globes - was shut out for Best Picture. Johnny Depp’s nom was the only major accolade for the film.
- A much-deserving Amy Adams did not receive a nom nor did her film, Enchanted.
- Atonement - the movie with the most nominations at the Globes - only received 3 in the major areas. The two main stars (Knightley, McAvoy) were also shut out.
- Cate Blanchett earned two nominations this year (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I’m Not There).
- Angelina Jolie was not recognized for her heartbreaking performance in A Mighty Heart.
- And last but not least, great news for (my personal) standouts this year: Ellen Page (Juno), Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) and screenwriter Click to continue reading 2008 Academy Award Nominations
