Hairspray 2 Project Canned
Another sequel bites the dust. As Hollywood rushes to reboot films which were perfectly made in the first place and begins scrambling to offer up more new installments in incredibly tired horror franchises, flicks we actually want to see are dropping off like flies. It’s a dark day in the musical movie genre: Hairspray 2 is dead.
“That got killed,” director Adam Shankman reported of the planned sequel. “I was so happy with the first one, let’s leave well enough alone. It’s all good.”
No way! Time for a fan campaign!

Zac Efron, the Movie Star

High School Musical icon Zac Efron may not be Footloose, but he’s still got plenty of potential projects to consider. Fans will soon see Efron starring as a younger version of Matthew Perry in 17 Again, yet another movie based on adults going back to adolescence. It’s also rumored that Efron will be featured in the next chapter of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and will co-star in the sequel to Hairspray.
Efron is playing it coy when it comes to both rumored projects, telling reporters that he would be happy to be involved in the Pirates project. Rumor has it that Johnny Depp is currently in talks to work on the flick. “It sounds like a good idea,” Efron said of the potential Hairspray sequel, which is not yet confirmed.
He may, however, have wrecked his chances to become a leading man for Judd Apatow. In 17 Again, Efron shares an on-screen kiss with actress Leslie Mann…otherwise known as Mrs. Apatow.

Here’s the latest scoop on the sequel buzz spreading across Hollywood:
Hairspray: Earlier this summer, New Line announced plans to produce a Hairspray follow. Unfortunately, the studio - which has already asked John Waters to write a treatment - may have a major casting issue to deal with. In a recent interview with Australia’s Sunday Herald Sun, John Travolta said he wasn’t looking forward to putting Edna Turnblad’s fat suit back on. “I think once is enough. I did it and I did it well but I’m not a big sequel guy,” the Look Who’s Talking Too star claimed. No other stars from the original cast have yet been confirmed for the new musical.

MTV Seeks Rocky Horror Remake

Yes, you unfortunately read that title correctly: MTV is seriously planning to remake the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
While I cannot deny how popular musicals have become (i.e. Mamma Mia!, High School Musical, Hairspray), are there not already tons of other musicals to tamper with other than this one? Can producers possibly more cold-hearted than I thought?
On the upside (yes, there’s actually an upside) to this, the executive producer of the original, Lou Adler, is attached to the project, along with BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios. They also plan on using the original screenplay (thankfully!); however, they may incorporate songs not included in the original (what?).

Here’s the latest scoop on the sequel buzz spreading across Hollywood:
The film that inspired a Broadway show and an update may soon spawn another creation: a sequel. New Line Cinema, obviously encouraged by the success of the High School Musical franchise (and last week’s debut of Mamma Mia!), has asked John Waters to begin writing a treatment for a follow to Hairspray.
According to Variety, the studio hopes to reunite members of last year’s cast in time for a 2010 release. The story would again be set in the 60’s, just where the Turnblad family left off.
While no actors have yet been lined up, most of the musical’s key players - including director/choreography Adam Shankman - are scheduled to return.

Assuming the ongoing writers’ strike doesn’t put a wrench into everyone’s plans, the 65th Annual Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled to air on Sunday, Jan. 13th. (The NBC telecast will come just 9 days prior to the Academy Award nominations.)
Here are the most notable omissions/additions in this year’s list of film honorees:
- Atonement led the nominations with seven; Charlie Wilson’s War came in second with five.
- Musicals (Sweeney Todd, Across the Universe, Hairspray) dominated the Comedy/Musical category.
- Cate Blanchett received two acting nominations (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I’m Not There).
- Philip Seymour Hoffman was also a double-nominee (The Savages, Charlie Wilson’s War)
- Hoffman’s Savages co-star, Laura Linney, was not nominated for her performance.
- The Kite Runner was nominated in the Foreign Film category.
- Javier Bardem was the only actor nominated from No Country for Old Men.
- Into the Wild was left out of all major categories.

My Advice for Waitress’ Keri Russell

I just recently watched the DVD of release of Waitress - you know, the movie you’ve been receiving all the acclaim and Oscar buzz for. Let me first start off by saying that I thought you did an amazing job. I was really happy to see you solidify your comeback since your heydey on Felicity. (I’ll even forget that your critically panned August Rush exists.)
So now that I’ve gotten the compliments out of the way, I must now move on to the purpose of my note. I read a very disturbing piece of news the other day and I’m hoping you will dispute the rumors.
Please tell me it’s not true. Please tell me you will not be starring in a comedy with Adam Sandler.
Granted, Adam Shankman (Hairspray) is slated to helm Bedtime Stories. I understand the appeal. But I’m begging you—don’t make an about face and go backwards with your career.
If this film were on the dramatic end of the Sandler spectrum (like Reign Over Me, Spanglish or Punch-Drunk Love), you might have my support. But playing the romantic interest in any Sandler comedy hasn’t really helped anyone. Don’t align yourself with the Jessical Biels of the world. You’re better than that. And how about Kate Beckinsale? How did Click benefit her? And does anyone remember Winona Ryder’s role in Mr. Deeds?
You’ve already proven your comedic chops with your stint on Scrubs. Now it’s time to take advantage of the awards season hoopla. Don’t tempt fate now by coming anywhere near a possible Rob Schneider appearance. Please.
