As masses of mostly-female fans huddled behind barriers wearing their promotional tank tops, the four women of the hour strolled down the red carpet for New York’s premiere of Sex and the City (the very last stop on a three-premiere tour for the movie), held at Radio City Music Hall. For this gala event, there is one concern which shines above all others: what did our Sexy ladies wear?

The May 12 premiere of the Sex and the City movie is still up in air, though it is said the film will certainly not make its debut at Cannes. Right now, insiders are hinting toward London, though it’s still not altogether impossible the movie will premiere in New York. The press junket is scheduled to begin in New York May 2, and rumor suggests Sex may premiere in London and New York.
As to the soundtrack, current gossip says that Fergie and Jennifer Hudson (who will play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant in the film) will both record new tunes. But the real Sex scoop was released by Cynthia Nixon, a.k.a. Miranda Hobbs. This certain redhead let it slip on April 15 that “a character dies in the movie.” Enter panic mode now.

The Buzz About ‘The Secret Life of Bees’

The Secret Life of Bees is one bee movie which will boast A-list stars. An adaptation of the best-selling book, the story is a coming-of-age tale which focuses on two friends. Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, and Sophie Okonedo are already signed up, while negotiations with Dakota Fanning and Alicia Keys are just on the verge of being wrapped up.
Set in the 1960s American south, The Secret Life of Bees is about teen Lily Owens (the role undoubtedly going to Fanning) and her pal Rosaleen (Hudson). The pair leave their homes on a quest to discover the truth about Lily’s deceased mother. While in South Carolina, the two meet three sisters who keep bees (Latifah, Okonedo and Keys). Since the script was completed pre-strike, this is one movie project that may not be quickly canceled.
Right now, Fox Searchlight plans to release the flick in 2008.

Jennifer Hudson is proving (to many jealous women out there) that her career did not peak with a silly little Oscar. The Academy Award winner has now been cast in the big screen version of Sex and the City.
The former American Idol contestant will be joining Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis in the Big Apple. After months of talk, production on the HBO show-turned film will finally begin next week.
While plot details have yet been leaked, we do know that Jennifer will play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant (Louise). Any guesses out there as to what that means? Did Carrie become a full-time writer at Vogue? Does this mean she will actually be working outside of her apartment...in an office?

Veronica Santiago and Neil Estep report back with their review of the Academy Award-winning Dreamgirls:
Set in the turbulent early 1960s to mid-70s, the tale follows the rise of a trio of women--Effie, Deena and Lorrell--who have formed a promising girl group called The Dreamettes. At a talent competition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor, Jr., who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: to become the back-up singers for headliner James “Thunder” Early. Curtis gradually takes control of the girls’ look and sound, eventually giving them their own shot in the spotlight as The Dreams. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Though the Dreams become a cross-over phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune may be higher than they ever imagined.

Although theater audiences were not offered much new to watch over the four-day weekend, I must say that I was bit surprised as to how the box office totals shook out. I was certain that Primeval would reign supreme. I mean—when when does a movie about a serial-killing crocodile not come out on top?? And despite Madonna’s participation, I thought Arthur and the Invisibles would place higher than 9th. Parents are always desperate to find something for their rug rats, right?
Here are the totals for last week (as compiled by Media By Numbers LLC):
1. Stomp the Yard, Sony Screen Gems, $25,876,318
2. Night at the Museum, Fox, $21,847,867
3. The Pursuit of Happyness, Sony, $10,703,352
4. Dreamgirls, Paramount, $10,259,911
5. Freedom Writers, Paramount, $8,849,005
6. Children of Men, Universal, $7,449,555
7. Alpha Dog, Universal, $7,411,750
8. Primeval, Disney, $6,792,318
9. Arthur and the Invisibles, MGM, $5,702,789
10. Charlotte’s Web, Paramount, $5,348,867
