Remake News: The Orphanage, Twilight Zone and More

The Orphanage: One of the most haunting movies I’ve seen in the past few years is being given an English-language redo. The Orphanage, the 2007 Spanish film from director Juan Antonio Bayona, will now be in the hands of Larry Fessenden. Guillermo del Toro, the producer on the original project, will serve the same role on this version. Guillermo also assisted Larry with the new script.

Lindsay LohanFreddy Krueger

UPDATE: Another producer on the film is now denying that the report is true.

Is Lindsay Lohan setting herself up to be the next scream queen?

According to Just Jared, the 22-year-old will be following up her Razzie Award-winning performance in I Know Who Killed Me with another horror film. Lohan has just agreed to star in the remake of .

“We were lucky to receive a call from Jason Weinberg, Lindsay’s manager,” producer Andrew Form told JustJared.com. “He called us to tell us that Lindsay was very interested in the film and wanted to be a part of it. We called Jason back after Wesley Strick finished the script and asked if Lindsay wanted to look at the first draft. She looked it over and loved it. She thought this was the perfect vehicle for her.”

Sex and the City Sequel is a Done Deal

Sex and the City

Ladies, get your high heels ready. All the appropriate contracts have been signed, and is becoming an even bigger franchise. That’s right: a Sex sequel will be forthcoming.

A spokesperson for New Line has confirmed that the movie’s four female stars and head writer Michael Patrick King have signed on for much more Sex. This news probably doesn’t come as much of a shock. After the money the first flick made, New Line would probably do anything to get the girls back on the set.

The movie will be in theaters, if all goes according to plan, sometime in the summer of 2010. And what’s the word on the script? In a recent statement, King had this to say: “I’m very excited to work with these amazing actresses again and would love to give everyone more information about the sequel…but I’m busy with my Sex life.”

Sequel News: Hulk, Wall Street, Evil Dead and More

The Incredible Hulk

Here’s the latest scoop on the sequel buzz spreading across Hollywood:

Hairspray: Earlier this summer, New Line announced plans to produce a Hairspray follow. Unfortunately, the studio - which has already asked John Waters to write a treatment - may have a major casting issue to deal with. In a recent interview with Australia’s Sunday Herald Sun, John Travolta said he wasn’t looking forward to putting Edna Turnblad’s fat suit back on. “I think once is enough. I did it and I did it well but I’m not a big sequel guy,” the Look Who’s Talking Too star claimed. No other stars from the original cast have yet been confirmed for the new musical.

The film that inspired a Broadway show and an update may soon spawn another creation: a sequel. New Line Cinema, obviously encouraged by the success of the High School Musical franchise (and last week’s debut of Mamma Mia!), has asked John Waters to begin writing a treatment for a follow to .

According to Variety, the studio hopes to reunite members of last year’s cast in time for a 2010 release. The story would again be set in the 60’s, just where the Turnblad family left off.

Box Office Breakdown: The Golden Army Raises Hell

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Apparently moviegoers were simply not interested in meeting anyone named Dave.

This past weekend, Eddie Murphy’s latest effort debuted in a disappointing 7th place. Fox’s pulled in only $5.2 million, the third worst opening total for the comedian. (Holy Man pulled in $5.1 million in 1998; The Adventures of Pluto Nash scraped up $2.2 million in 2002.)

Dave‘s poor performance gave two other entries plenty of room at the top of the charts. earned approximately $11 million more than the original 2004 film. The sequel’s $34.5 million haul also narrowly edged out last week’s winner, Hancock, and gave director Guillermo del Toro a first place berth. Meanwhile, the Journey to the Center of the Earth‘s $21 million was good enough for third place.

Sex and the City Sequel Talk

Sex and the City Movie

I think you could probably file this under the “No Duh” category. During the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday, HBO’s programming head told everyone what they already knew: There’s talk about a sequel out there.

According to Michael Lombardo, “There’s enormous interest by Warner Bros. and New Line, and we’re trying to put that together now. Everyone associated with the project was liberated by the enthusiasm of the fans.”

But fans should, of course, not anticipate forming another group outing anytime soon. There’s still quite a few matters that need to be settled first - like a script, signed contracts…and how about possibly a reason? Is there a point where we should just let these girls walk off in their stilettos quietly? What could possibly happen to Carrie and Big next time? Will he decide that he likes Napa better than New York City?
