Michael Fassbender to Take Mother on Oscar Date

Michael Fassbender wants to take his mother on a date to the Oscars.
The Shame actor - who is widely tipped to be nominated for an Academy Award following a blockbuster year of movies including A Dangerous Method, X-Men: First Class, and Haywire - has his parents to thank for him being able to earn a living prior to making it big, and he would like to take his mum down the red carpet at the event.
"It took me a while to come to grips with how expensive London was. My parents helped me out, but we never had a lot of money. [An Oscar Nomination] would just be a bonus, but of course I would take my mum down the red carpet."
Discussing his role in Shame, the Irish/German star admits he was "worried" about the gravity of playing a man who was dealing with an addiction to sex: "I was a bit worried that I'd perhaps bitten off more than I could chew. But I'm always interested in trying to investigate different personalities. I want to keep myself guessing and keep the fear element alive so that I don't get too comfortable."

Ricky Gervais Wants to Host Oscars

Watch out, Oscar! Ricky Gervais has offered to host the Academy Awards.
The controversial comedian - who upset Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie when he hosted the Golden Globes earlier this year - has revealed he would be happy to present the Oscars following the departure of Eddie Murphy as the host.
"I'll do it. I'll do that as well. I'll be in town any way for the Globes. I can knock off 20 per cent. A two for one deal! I'll just stay up there."
The British star, however, admits he is not yet been offered the opportunity to present the Golden Globes for the third time on January 15, 2012: "They haven't asked me officially yet, and I don't know whether I'd say yes. It's very tempting. It's tempting because for three hours, I'm the most feared man in Los Angeles, so that's nice. I think NBC wants me to do it, but the Hollywood Foreign Press have got to want me as well. It's their event, it's their party."
2011 Academy Award Nominations

Academy Award winner Mo'Nique (Precious) and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' President Tom Sherak had the honor of announcing the nominees for the 2011 Annual Academy Awards early Tuesday morning.
The King's Speech lead all films this morning with 12 nominations total. True Grit came in second with 10 nods. Meanwhile, The Social Network and Inception both tied with 8 nominations.
Here are some of the noteworthy omissions and inclusions from today’s press conference:
- Best Director: No Christopher Nolan (Inception). Seriously?? (Even James Cameron has to say something about that!)
- Best Movie: No for Blue Valentine, yes for Winter's Bone and Toy Story 3 (also nominated in Animation category)
- Best Actor: No Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine)!!! Also, no Mark Wahlberg (Fighter), no Leo DiCaprio (Inception), no Aaron Eckhart (Rabbit Hole), no Paul Giamatti (recent Golden Globe winner for Barney's Version). Javier Bardem, though, gets a yes for Biutiful.
- Best Actress: No Julianne Moore (The Kids are All Right), no Halle Berry (Frankie & Alice)
- Best Supp. Actor: No Andrew Garfield or Justin Timberlake (The Social Network), but a big YES for Jeremy Renner (The Town) and John Hawkes (Winter's Bone)

Inception Making (Pseudo) Return to Theaters

In order to make sure that Inception -- a film that debuted way back in July -- doesn't get lost during the awards season madness, Warner Bros. is bringing the movie back into theaters.
Starting at the end of this month, a behind-the-scenes video about the blockbuster will play in theaters across the country. The hope is to get the Inception (which is currently out on DVD) back into the voters' minds. (Not that we non-voters could possibly forget about that film anytime soon.)
Although the entry did receive a Golden Globe nomination earlier this month, we still have weeks to go before the Oscar candidates are announced. The Academy Award nominations will be revealed on January 25.

James Franco and Anne Hathaway: New Academy Awards Hosts

For the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be going about as far away as Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin as you can get.
It’s been announced that Anne Hathaway and James Franco – two other Saturday Night Live hosting vets – have been asked to front the live event. This would be the second year in a row a pair of actors shared hosting duties.

Sigourney Weaver: Kathryn Bigelow’s Breasts Won Her the Oscar

Although James Cameron seemed genuinely pleased for his ex-wife, there was one person who wasn’t happy about Kathryn Bigelow’s Academy Awards success: Sigourney Weaver.
In a Brazilian interview to promote Cameron’s move, the Avatar actress said Bigelow’s gender was the reason why she nabbed the first Best Director prize ever for a female director.
“Jim didn’t have breasts, and I think that was the reason,” Weaver told Folha Online. “He should have taken home that Oscar.”

Why Was Farrah Fawcett Not Mentioned at Oscars?

I was too distracted by Demi Moore’s thin frame last night to initially notice this omission. But let me assure you—many people on Twitter didn’t, and neither did Ryan O’Neal.
Although Patrick Swayze, David Carradine, Natasha Richardson and Michael Jackson were some of the names included in the Academy Award’s “In Memoriam” segment, one name was left off that annual list: Farrah Fawcett.
Yes, Farrah was primarily known for her television work—but she did act in a number of big screen projects including Logan’s Run, Extremities and The Apostle. (And really - does anyone think of Michael Jackson as a movie star?) But yet, despite all the tabloids her face helped sell last year (and the documentaries that ran about her health battle), the 62-year-old didn’t make the final cut. (No pun intended.)

The 2010 Academy Awards: Live Commentary

When you throw in an extra host, add five more Best Picture nominees, take away the Best Song performances and nominate two formerly married directors—what do you get? A night that will surely be talked about.
Although many believe the 82nd Annual Academy Awards will end with very few surprises, the possibility of an upset is still too great to ignore. Will the box office champ (Avatar) win Best Film as well? Or will The Hurt Locker - or even Inglourious Basterds - take the prize? Is Jeff Bridges a shoo-in for Best Actor…or could BAFTA winner Colin Firth sneak past him? Will Sandra Bullock have to deliver another acceptance speech, or will Meryl Streep take home her first Oscar since 1983?

No Best Song Performances at the Academy Awards

If you’ve ever found yourself tuning out during the ritual Academy Awards musical performances, this announcement may come as good news to you: next month’s telecast won’t be featuring any.
To be clear - I should, of course, say the Best Song nominees won’t be performing any. I wouldn’t be surprised if co-producer Adam Shankman threw a musical montage into the broadcast somewhere.
While I can’t say I would entirely miss that portion of the program, it saddens me to think that beautiful songs like “Falling Slowly” (Once) might not get the attention they deserve. And where else could you possibly see “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” performed before a sea of tuxedos?
