Directing the Dead SXSW

The anticipation of being in the same room as Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth at Film was worth the very long wait in line, but within 20 minutes word had spread that Tarantino and Roth were no shows.

They were both supposed to accompany other notable directors Ti West (The House of the Devil), Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Matt Reeves (Cloverfield).

Many people jumped out of line before they could learn that Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror/The Faculty) and Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers/The Descent) were going to be the replacements on the panel. When people found out Rodriguez was on the panel the room quickly filled up! Especially since he just debuted the preview for his upcoming movie Predators.

Oscar statues

When you throw in an extra host, add five more Best Picture nominees, take away the Best Song performances and nominate two formerly married directors—what do you get? A night that will surely be talked about.

Although many believe the will end with very few surprises, the possibility of an upset is still too great to ignore. Will the box office champ (Avatar) win Best Film as well? Or will The Hurt Locker - or even Inglourious Basterds - take the prize? Is Jeff Bridges a shoo-in for Best Actor…or could BAFTA winner Colin Firth sneak past him? Will Sandra Bullock have to deliver another acceptance speech, or will Meryl Streep take home her first Oscar since 1983?

To find out if the ceremony ends in a world of Hurt or Up in the Air, stay tuned here for the live results!

2010 Academy Award Nominations

Academy Award nominations 2010

After the list of nominees were announced this morning, two movies rose to the top of the pack. Avatar and The Hurt Locker - helmed respectively by James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow - both lead the field with nine nominations each. Thankfully, the formerly married directors still get along.

Even though this will be the first time since 1943 (when Casablanca won) that ten films will go up for Best Film, this year’s list only revealed a handful of surprises. Those who have been following other ceremonies during this awards season saw very little changes in the acting categories.

Here are some of the noteworthy mentions/omissions from today’s nominations:

  • Many had hoped The Hangover, Star Trek and/or (500) Days of Summer would go up for Best Picture. Many were left disappointed.
  • Is this the first time Daniel Day-Lewis wasn’t nominated for simply breathing?
  • Acting queen is up now up for her sweet 16th nomination for her role in Julie & Julia. (I believe I will one day see her 20th.)
  • Speaking of leading women, there will be three newcomers going up against vets Streep and (The Last Station): Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Carey Mulligan (An Education) and Gabourey Sidibe (Precious)—someone who wasn’t even an actress to begin with!
  • Disney/Pixar’s will be double-dipping it this year. The feature has been nominated in both the Best Film and Best Animated Film categories.

Will Helen Mirren Work with Tarantino?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Casting, Rumors

Helen MirrenDame is being lined up to play a foul-mouthed monarch.

The Last Station actress has been approached by to play an aggressive queen in his upcoming movie - which is expected to be set in England’s Middle Ages.

“It will feature his trademarks - bloody violence and foul language. Helen has never worked with Tarantino and is interested. If the film goes into production it’s likely she will play a part,” a source told The Sun newspaper.

The 64-year-old actress, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in , admitted she would love to do sequel because portraying the long-serving monarch was one of her most satisfying roles.

The Queen was such an individual, idiosyncratic film. It was one of a kind. You can’t repeat that. People have asked, ‘Is there going to be a sequel?’ Yes, let’s do the golden jubilee. That would be interesting,” Mirren said.

Helen also played a queen in 2005 when she starred in Elizabeth I, a British TV mini-series which looked at the second half of the royal’s 45-year-long reign over the UK and Commonwealth.

2010 Golden Globe Nominations (Film)

Up in the Air

The 2009-10 awards season kicked into high gear this morning with the official announcement of the nominations. The event - which will be hosted by funnyman Ricky Gervais - will take place just over two weeks before the Academy Award contenders are revealed.

Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from this year’s list of film nominees:

  • leads all film nominations with six. The musical Nine follows with five while Avatar and Inglourious Basterds tied with four.
  • As expected, Meryl Streep has received another two mentions—unfortunately, they are both in the Comedy category (Julie & Julia, It’s Complicated). On the surprising end, Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side, The Proposal) and Matt Damon (Invictus, The Informant) both have two nominations as well—thankfully, in different categories.
  • Talk about drama! An ex-husband and wife will be competing against each other in the Best Director race. (Avatar‘s James Cameron and The Hurt Locker‘s Kathryn Bigelow.)
  • Despite backing from both Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey, is not a contender for Best Film. Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe were both recognized for their excellent acting though.

The 67th Golden Globe Awards airs Jan. 17 on NBC.

Quentin Tarantino Renames Kill Bill

Quentin TarantinoQuentin Tarantino‘s next Kill Bill movie will have a different name.

The cult director has revealed he will have to re-title the third in the martial arts action franchise because the title character Bill - who was portrayed by the late actor David Carradine - was killed off at the end of the second movie.

“It wouldn’t be Kill Bill. It would be Volume Three of the story of the Bride.”

The Bride, also known as Beatrice, is the female lead portrayed by Uma Thurman. The 46-year-old filmmaker was also quick to deny the third installation of the bloodied action film will be his next project:

“There’s no script; there are just ideas and notes. I won’t do that next, but it could very well be the thing I do after next. We’re getting there. We’re about one movie away. There’s a lot of idle talk going on out there. At the same time, though, it’s what I’ve been saying from the beginning. That cracks me up, because somebody asked me about it in one of my overseas trips and I said it.”

Inglourious Basterds Prequel Possibly in the Works

Inglourious Basterds posterWith one of the world’s most vied-for actors at your command and scoring an impressive $38 million at the box office, it’s nearly impractical for Quentin Tarantino to not pursue another Inglourious Basterds film.

According to Eli Roth, the chances are pretty good.

“Everybody would drop whatever they’re doing to go back to work with Quentin… All the time, Brad says, ‘Prequel, prequel!’ All the ‘basterds’ would jump on it in a second. We have three scenes that we shot in Boston that take place before the war, and Quentin says if he does the prequel, he’s going to use them. They’re not going to be DVD extras.”

Without spilling too many secrets, Roth briefly describes one of the scenes, which features a rather random cameo…
