Best Movie Heroes

Yesterday, we took a look at the greatest villains ever to grace the big screen. But where would characters like Emperor Palpatine and Lex Luthor be without their counterparts: the movie heroes?

Today, we’ll look at the greatest heroes who ever shined on film. Will your favorite make the cut?

Shrek (Shrek, 2001; Shrek 2, 2004; Shrek the Third, 2007) voice of Mike Myers: He is the epitome of an unlikely hero and almost unintentionally saves the day every time. In true hero fashion, he does it all with a witty line and an unwillingness to seriously harm evildoers. What cements this animated character as a true movie hero? No hero can save the day without his trusty side quick, and Shrek has the best: Donkey (voice of Eddie Murphy).

Heath Ledger: Legendary Villain

The Dark Knight has yet to hit theaters, yet it’s already shaping up to be Heath Ledger’s greatest flick. Critics are raving, the trailers primarily feature him in grotesque make-up, and Moviefone has added him to their list of great on-screen villains. There’s only one problem: I don’t agree with Moviefone’s list.

The list of Top 25 movie villains includes old favorites like Khan (Star Trek II), Cruella de Ville (101 Dalmations), Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford (Mommie Dearest), Jimmy Cagney as the Public Enemy (love, love, love Cagney), Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers. On Moviefone’s list, Heath’s Joker comes in at Number 5, trumped by Hannibal Lecter, the Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz), Darth Vader and Lord Voldemort.

And I think Moviefone is wrong. While there were some on the list who were truly chilling - Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes in Misery, for instance - others were left off the countdown completely. So with no further delay I will name the on-screen villains I found the most frightening and fearsome in big-screen flicks. None of my villains made it to Moviefone’s list and I can’t imagine why.

Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher’s Secret Star Wars Tryst

We all know Han Solo and Princess Leia had great chemistry on-screen—but who knew the two Star Wars characters were just as hot off-screen?  While she didn’t elaborate on all the details, actress Carrie Fisher recently admitted to having a romantic encounter of some sort with former co-star Harrison Ford. 

During a British TV interview, Fisher said she went into the original installment with a plan in mind.  “I went on the film saying ‘I’m going to have an affair’, like it was a kiwi, an exotic fruit — because I’d never had one!”

Couples With The Worst On-Screen Chemistry

Chemistry, schmemistry.  If you know people are going to be watching your movie anyway—does it really matter?  Whaddya say, George Lucas?

Film advertising company Pearl & Dean polled 3,000 British moviegoers to see which couples they felt had the worst on-screen chemistry.  Based on the results, it’s hard to say whether or not those opinions had any affect on the eventual box office receipts.  While I completely agree that Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen fizzled as secret-lovers, I don’t know that the movie’s storyline (or final numbers) could have improved with a different twosome.

Take a look at the poll results and see what you think.  Which couples would you add to this list?  Three pairings that come to my mind:  Julia Roberts/ Nick Nolte (I Love Trouble), Julia Roberts/ Brad Pitt (The Mexican) and Julia Roberts/ John Cusack (America’s Sweethearts).
