‘Gravity’ Scoops Up Six BAFTAs

Gravity won big at the BAFTAs last night, taking home six awards.
The 3-D space drama directed by Alfonso Cuaron and starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock was the biggest winner of the night at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs) in London, gaining trophies for Best Director, Special Visual Effects, Cinematography, Original Music, Sound and Outstanding British Film. Accepting his award, Alfonso - who is Mexican, but has lived in England for more than ten years - said, "I don't know if I can open my mouth. I consider myself a part of the British film industry. I guess I make a good case for curbing immigration." He also praised his son, Jonas, and Sandra Bullock before dedicating the award to the "downstairs" workers who had made the film's sound and effects possible.
Although Gravity won the most trophies, historical drama 12 Years A Slave was named Best Film and its star, Chiwetel Ejiofor, took the Leading Actor award. Accepting the trophy, Chiwetel thanked director Steve McQueen, saying, "Thank you for you work, your artistry and your passion in this project ... to make it of such value, of such worth. This is yours by the way - I'm going to keep it, that's the kind of guy I am, but it's yours."

2010 BAFTA Award Winners

Avatar may be the overseas (and domestic) box office champ, but how would it fare with the international voters?
This weekend’s Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony proved James Cameron’s movie might not be a shoe-in at next month’s Academy Awards. In fact, ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow could see her movie, The Hurt Locker, take the Best Film honor from him.
In total, the gritty war drama collected six statues including the first ever BAFTA for a female director. (Avatar and The Young Victoria both took in two awards each.) Meanwhile, the top acting prizes went to two British stars: Colin Firth (A Single Man) and Carey Mulligan (An Education).

Winslet, Rourke Awarded with BAFTAs

While it’s looking pretty clear that Slumdog Millionaire will take home the Oscar later this month, the race for Best Actor and Best Actress remains a bit muddy.
At yesterday’s Orange British Academy Film Awards, Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Kate Winslet (The Reader) both took home the top honors for acting. Although this is similar to how they performed at the Golden Globes, neither actor was a winner at the recent SAG Awards. (Sean Penn and Meryl Streep took home the statues that evening.)
