Box Office Breakdown: ‘Ender’ Beats ‘Bad Grandpa’

Ender's Game

Though last week's number one film, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, had movie-goers paying plenty of money for the laughs, newcomer Ender's Game was more appealing to them in this box office weekend.

The sci-fi film - Starring Harrison Ford - earned $27 million, pushing Bad Grandpa down to second place with its $20 million. Last Vegas and Free Birds also debuted this weekend, landing respectively at number three and four with $16.3 million and $15.8 million. Rounding out the top five was Gravity, which slipped three spots from its position at number two last week due to its $12.8 million take.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Grandpa’ Kicks Gravity Out of Top Spot

'Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa'

Gravity had a nice three weeks at number one, but the critically-acclaimed space film starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock was apparently no match for the latest Jackass film, Bad Grandpa.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa - which sees veteran Jackass-er Johnny Knoxville as the eponymous patriarch - debuted at number one this weekend with $32 million, which effectively left Gravity in the dust with its $20.1 million, which secured it a second place spot. Captain Phillips dropped one spot to number three with $11.6 million while the much-hyped The Counselor debuted at number four with $7.8 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 remained at number five with $6.2 million.

Quote of the Day: Peter Berg on Why ‘Battleship’ Flopped

Peter Berg on the set of 'Battleship'

"I felt I had a new understanding of what went into making a blockbuster [after making Hancock]... I got a taste of a film's global power. But I discounted the effect of Will Smith on Hancock's success. I thought I could pull off Battleship without a big star."

The latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise garnered $19.7 million, while the magician thriller Now You See Me also fell one spot to number three with $19.5 million. For the return of Wedding Crashers duo Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, their newest comedy The Internship didn't fair too well, debuting at number four with $18.1 million. Box Office Breakdown: ‘Now You See Me,’ ‘After Earth’ Trail Behind

Vin Diesel in 'Fast & Furious 6'

Neither magic tricks nor an futuristic-yet-abysmal Will Smith vehicle were enough to bring Fast & Furious 6 down from its number one position. The car thriller held its own in its second week at the theaters with $34.5 million while newcomers Now You See Me and After Earth just couldn't make the cut to the top spot.

The Louis Leterrier-helmed Now You See Me placed second with $28 million while M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth debuted with $27 million (even removing Shyamalan's name from promotional material for the film couldn't guarantee a better debut). Epic stayed put at number four in its second week with $16.4 million while Star Trek Into Darkness fell two spots to number five.
