Total Recall is No Match for Batman

It sure looks like no one is stopping the Batman anytime soon.
Christopher Nolan's final installment of his Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, continues its reign at the box office, taking in $36.4 million in its third weekend. The Total Recall remake and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days debuted, respectively, at number two and three with $26 million and $14.7 million. Ice Age: Continental Drift was bumped down two spots to number four with $8.4 million while The Watch also fell two spots to number five with $6.3 million.

Box Office Breakdown: The Dark Knight Rises Above Predecessor

Despite the tragedy that occurred in Aurora, Colorado early Friday morning, The Dark Knight Rises still managed to succeed The Dark Knight in its opening weekend record with $160.8 million.
The animated family film Ice Age: Continental Drift fell from its number one spot with $20.4 million while Marvel's The Amazing Spider-Man dropped to the number three spot in its third week with $10.8 million. Seth MacFarlane's big screen debut, Ted, took in $10.1 million, securing the number four spot, and the latest Disney/Pixar film Brave dipped one more spot to round out the top five with $6 miilion.

Box Office Breakdown: Spider-Man Nabs Top Spot

While it may not have done as well as its predecessor, the latest Spider-Man movie installment, The Amazing Spider-Man, still managed to earn the number one spot at the box office this weekend with an estimated $65 million.
Following the superhero adaptation came Ted - last week's number one - which pulled in $32.5 million. The latest Disney/Pixar vehicle, Brave, stayed static at number three with $20.1 million while Oliver Stone's Savages debuted at number four with $16.1 million. Rounding out the top five was Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, which dropped three spots from number two with $15.6 million.

Box Office Breakdown: Brave Dethrones Madagascar 3

Although movie-goers have been kind to Madagascar 3 for the past couple weeks, it didn't quite stand a chance against the newcomer Pixar/Disney film Brave, which secured Pixar's 13th first place debut with $66.7 million.
The third Madagascar film secured its second place spot with $20.2 million while the period horror film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter debuted at number three with $16.5 million. Coming in fourth place is Prometheus with $10 million while Rock of Ages rounded out the top five with $8 million.

Cinema Scene: Newsies Heading to Broadway, August: Osage County Heading to Theaters

-Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep may team up for August: Osage County, a big screen version of a Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Playwright Tracy Letts would adapt his own story for the Weinsten production.
-Meanwhile, a Broadway version of Newsies, a 1992 Disney musical starring Christian Bale, is being written by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast), Harvey Fierstein and Jack Feldman.
-Speaking of musicals, the cast of The Sound of Music will reunite later this month for the first time in 45 years. Christopher Plummer, Julie Andrews and the kids will all appear October 29 on Oprah.
-Brenda Chapman has just been named the first female director in Pixar history. Brave, a movie she will also write, will be released in June 2012. Reese Witherspoon, Emma Thompson, and Julie Walters will all voice characters in the project.
