G-Force

Let’s face it: Daniel Radcliffe may be cute, but guinea pigs are cuter.

Despite earning $78 million last weekend, could not keep up the magic. The sequel fell to second place after earning a still impressive $29.5 million take over the past three days. Overall, the film has raked in $220 million to date and a delayed opening in IMAX theaters this Wednesday - Transformers 2 had been taking up room - should give the film another boost.

So what could possibly scoot the wizards out of first place? Rodents. Disney, which has already seen The Proposal and Up premiere on top this summer, earned another victory with the debut of . The comedy about a bunch of whiskered CIA operatives roped in $31.6 million over the weekend, just enough for a close win.

Box Office Breakdown: Bruno Crawls His Way to #1

Bruno crawling

Just like in the fashion world, one day was hot—the next day he was not.

Even though the comedy did well enough to place first this weekend, it appears the sexually graphic film may have turned some off. Ticket sales for the entry dropped 39% between Friday and Saturday, leading many to believe that negative word of mouth played a factor.

In total, Bruno piqued enough interest to raise $30.6 million over three days. While that gross beats Borat‘s $26.5 million debut, the 2006 film later went on to earn $129 million domestically.

Gay Community Split Over Baron’s Bruno

Bruno

Apparently, lightning does strike twice. At least, this seems to be the case for . After gaining plenty of attention (and revenue) with Borat, Cohen turned homosexuality on its ear with his flamboyant character Bruno. The film is number one at the box office and already getting more press than you can shake a stick at, but that doesn’t mean he’s got the full support of the gay community.

Jarrett Barrios, soon-to-be president of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), issued a statement regarding Cohen’s character, saying the comedian used too many stereotypes in his depiction of a gay kid from Nebraska. The organization spoke to Universal Pictures about their concerns, but the studio maintains that is meant to challenge homophobia.

Movie Review: Brüno

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Universal, Satire, Comedy, New Releases,

BrunoConsider the hype over after a very funny and, dare I say (I will), brilliant Borat.  Also consider how many times you and your friends have said, “D and G.  Dolce and Gabana… Hello!”  Obviously, there are going to be lots of expectations and anticipation, which was definitely the case when I sat down in my seat, readying myself to laugh hard and be shocked because you knew it was going to happen.  Well, the laughs did come and the shock was definitely there.  It was so bad, some mother who brought her adolescent daughters actually walked out of the theater after five minutes.  But, seriously, what was she expecting?

The film follows the same cinematography of Borat with hidden cameras, an exponential amount of locations, spliced scenes within scenes, and the embarrassment of real-life people that have no idea that they are looking either very dumb, very homophobic, and/or very punked.  Sacha Baron Cohen is an unbelievable comedic actor and he sells playing his character Brüno very well.  And if you’ve seen Brüno appearing on various talk shows to promote the movie, such as David Letterman, you know this already.

LaToya Jackson Scene Removed from Bruno

LaToya Jackson may be known for pushing the boundaries, but he won’t - at least in this situation - be labeled insensitive.

Shortly after Michael Jackson’s death, the producers of Borat made quick edits before their film’s premiere. A scene that featured a Jackson sibling was cut from the film.

“Out of respect for the Jackson family, the filmmakers have decided to remove a small scene involving La Toya Jackson,” a Universal Pictures spokesperson said.

In previous screenings, critics saw the flamboyant title character trick Michael’s sister doing an interview with him. Bruno then went on to talk about the King of Pop’s high-pitched voice and trademark glove. He also attempted to retrieve the singer’s number from LaToya’s cell phone.

Although it was initially unsure whether the edit would be temporary, the studio confirmed today that the scene would be left out of the theatrical release.

opens on July 10.

Just because ‘s R-rated now doesn’t mean he can’t show off his assets.

Although it was originally slapped with an NC-17, an edited version of Brüno has made its way past the MPAA censors. (If you want to guess which scenarios were trimmed, you can view the red band trailer here.) Those old enough to see the original version will most likely see the cuts in the DVD release.

The cringe-inducing mockumentary will hit the catwalk on July 10. Until then, you can learn much more about the flamboyant Austrian fashionista through his “MeinSpace” page.
