Terry Gilliam: Avatar’s Success Hurts Other Filmmakers

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celeb News, Filmmaking

Terry Gilliam

has blasted Avatar for limiting the opportunities of less successful filmmakers.

The The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus director said James Cameron’s epic 3-D blockbuster - now the biggest grossing film in history - cost so much to make, it meant many other projects missed out on funding.

“There are so many small, beautiful filmmakers and actors and directors with so much potential that just can’t get a look in because the studios are pumping all their money into these huge projects,” Gilliam claimed. “There are such incredible lower-budget films that are magical, but we’ve got our work cut out with things like coming out. How are these young talents supposed to get a look in without the budget? That’s the sad thing, because they are just as good.”

Justin Timberlake Indirectly Funds British Horror Film

Colin movie posterJustin Timberlake helped fund Colin, an ultra-low budget British horror movie, without even knowing it!

Marc Price, who claims that he made his debut film for just $70, said he never bought any make-up for the zombies and instead relied on what his makeup artist friends could donate from jobs where they hadn’t used everything up.

“The girl who was our head of makeup was cool because she was doing a lot of pop promos at the time—she didn’t need much liquid latex for Justin Timberlake so she was able to leave quite a lot with us.”

Marc also said his team had a few run-ins with the general public when they were filming some of the film’s gorier scenes: “The most crazy was when we had a scene with a guy having his face ripped off. I had the video camera in one hand and I was ripping off the face with the other hand, then all of a sudden this woman peered over, and said, ‘excuse me…’—she ignored the camera and ignored the fact I was ripping his face off, she thought it was real—and she said ‘excuse me are you ok? Do you want any help?’”

Colin is due in theaters on October 23 and is available on DVD on October 26.

Rogue Pictures Seeking Strangers Sequel

Studio heads try to get Liv Tyler for Strangers sequel

Having domestically grossed $54 with a modest $9 million budget, The Strangers was a tremendous hit for Rogue Pictures. Of course, we all unfortunately know what follows any amount of success in Hollywood these days: sequels.

Hoping that they have a new horror franchise on their hands, producers over at the Universal Pictures subsidary have their greedy hearts set on Liv Tyler‘s return, as well as the rest of the original villains (just admit how much you loved seeing Gemma Ward as the creepy psycho girl).

How Much is Shia LaBeouf’s Absence Worth?

Shia LaBeouf in Transformers

Even though it appears Shia LaBeouf will no longer be blamed for his accident on Sunday, the actor’s collision will still have a costly effect on Transformer 2‘s production.

According to his rep’s last statement, the 22-year-old’s recuperating hand could keep him from the set for weeks. One Hollywood insider says this delay could mean a $200,000 blow to the studio…per day.

How much LaBeouf’s PR spin will cost him is unknown.
