Disney Sued for Ripping Off Cars Script, Sequel Delayed?

Jake Mandeville-Anthony, U.K. screenwriter, has just filed an injunction to stop the June 24 release of the highly-anticipated Disney/Pixar sequel, Cars 2. His claim? The uber-company ripped off his script -- Cars was his idea in the first place.
Mandeville-Anthony says he originally submitted a script in the 90s, a three-part screenplay named “Cookie & Co.” and another piece titled “Cars.” His “Cars” contained a sample screenplay, animated car character descriptions, character sketches… even a marketing and merchandising plan. The writer alleges that he submitted his work to Disney and met with Lucasfilm exec Jim Morris in 1993. Morris would go on to join Pixar in 2005. He is now the company’s general manager.

Actor Paul Newman Dies at 83

Paul Newman, the Academy Award-winning actor and philanthropist, died Friday at his home near Westport, Conn. The 83-year-old passed away after a long a battle with cancer.
Newman, best known by children today as the voice of Doc Hudson in Cars, was last seen on the big screen in 2002’s Road to Perdition (a role he was nominated for). In 2005, he starred in Empire Falls, an HBO production for which he won an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
In 2007, Paul told Good Morning America that he intended to put acting behind him. At that point, Newman had already starred in a string of classic films including The Hustler, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Cool Hand Luke. He had also received three Oscars—one for his role in 1986’s The Color of Money and two others for his career achievements and humanitarian work.

Disney/Pixar’s quaint animated story about Remy the rat and his penchant for the culinary arts releases on Blu-ray this week, shortly after taking the US and UK by storm. And with no other major title to contend with (Chuck & Larry do not count), Ratatouille is sure to take high-def home entertainment by storm too.
Other titles worth noting include a cross-format The Aviator from Warner, South Korean cult film Old Boy from Tartan, and some modestly-priced box sets from Warner and Disney.

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker to return for The Fast and the Furious 4?

Well, audiences waited long enough (through two sequels), and now The Fast and the Furious franchise will reward the faithful with an installment several years in the making. That’s right: Vin Diesel and Paul Walker will finally reunite and reprise their original Fast roles. Maybe. The two are in talks to reprise their roles as Dominic Toretto and Brian O’Conner, which launched Vin Diesel as a major action star and helped the movie gross more than $200 million worldwide. Walker appeared in 2 Fast 2 Furious, which out-grossed the original, though Diesel could not be swayed from his other movie engagements at the time. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, the third installation in the movie series, featured Diesel only briefly and Walker not at all. The fourth movie will feature more cars, more dirty deals, and hopefully more ticket sales than the third (which nearly grossed $160 million but was considered disappointing to Fast fans). The film, yet to be titled, will begin shooting in LA, Mexico and the Dominican Republic next spring. Diesel and Walker are both currently tied to unrelated movie projects, and neither has confirmed accepting a role in the fourth Fast flick.
