Philip Seymour Hoffman Will Not Appear via CGI in ‘Mockingjay’

Philip Seymour HoffmanPhilip Seymour Hoffman will not be digitally recreated to appear in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

The actor tragically died in February of a heroin overdose before he could complete the sci-fi film and director Francis Lawrence is determined to include the star in the scenes he couldn't complete, but will not settle for digitally enhancing his image into the movie.

"We finished the majority of his work. I think he might have had eight to 10 days left on our schedule. In most of those scenes, Phil didn't have any dialogue. We are going to put him into those scenes, but we're only using real footage. We're not creating anything digital or a robotic version of him," he said.

Shortly after his passing, studio Lionsgate, who is making the movies, said Philip would be recreated for scenes using CGI effects. Producer Nina Jacobson said they may give some of the star's character, Plutarch Heavensbee's, lines to other characters, but said that would happen "only in circumstances that we are able to do that without undermining the intent of the scene."

Before picture of Jessica Alba in MacheteAfter picture of Jessica Alba in Machete

If you're a Jessica Alba admirer, you probably already know -- and have been disappointed by the fact -- that she doesn't like to do nudity. That's why a scene in the recent film Machete caused many jaws to drop. Well, prepare to have them dropped further.

Although the actress really didn't (fake) expose more than what we see in magazines these days, that extra amount of skin was actually the result of computer magic. As you can see from the before still on the left, the married mother of one wore a strapless bra and underwear for the moment.

James Cameron’s Avatar Excitement

James Cameron on the set of Avatar was like a “kid in a candy store” on the set of Avatar.

Actress - who stars as Dr Grace Augustine in the new 3-D animated blockbuster - said watching the director helm his first movie in 12 years since the epic Titanic was incredibly rewarding.

“He invented the cameras, he was using the cameras. He was shooting his characters in the flora and fauna he created with the creatures that he created. He was having a great time, and so were we. To see him on the set of Avatar was like watching a kid in a candy store.”

James - who spent four years producing the movie - used revolutionary CGI techniques that required the actors to work wearing a camera fitted to a helmet, which picked up their facial expressions. The 60-year-old Hollywood star said the director managed to create a “magic” on set.

“When we were in our little suits with our ears and tails we could see what we looked like in Jim’s magic camera - I don’t know what he calls it, I call it the magic camera - so we were free just to be with each other as actors, as characters and Jim’s focus was completely on us.”

Casting Corner: James McAvoy, Ben Affleck, Nicolas Cage

James McAvoy

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

It seems as if there isn’t a woman can’t romance. In the past few years, he’s been paired with Gillian Anderson, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathway and, of course, Angelina Jolie. Now the rising actor will be taking on his biggest chemistry challenge yet.

In Gnomeo and Juliet, McAvoy and Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) will voice characters in a CGI-animated version of the Shakespeare drama. But those looking for any Montagues or Capulets will be pleasantly surprised. In this version, the lovers will actually come from rivaling families of garden gnomes.

This film, co-produced by Elton John, will also feature music from the Lion King musician. The feature should be completed by 2010.

Heath Ledger’s Last Project May Continue

Heath LedgerHeath Ledger’s death left many questions unanswered.  Although we may know the answer to one of those in just a matter of days, other matters - like the status of his last film project - are still up in the air.  While the execs behind work furiously to redesign their marketing campaign - how can they create hype about a movie that’s largely about the The Joker? - the creators behind are simply trying to keep their movie alive.

Production on Parnasssus - a film about a traveling theater troupe and its magical mirror - had been shut down since news broke last week.  (Ledger had been working on that film just days prior to his death.)  Even though the $30 million pic may have to be scrapped altogether, co-star says there is hope the movie will still carry on.  According to Plummer, director is doing everything he can to work around Ledger’s absence.  The actor told People that “because the film deals with magic, there is a way, perhaps, of turning Heath into other people and then, using stills and I think they call it CGI…”

Getting Deep With ‘The Water Horse’

The Water HorseSure, I’ll admit it. I saw the trailers for and turned my nose straight up into the air. Like I really have the time to watch an entire movie with people acting to the air, as the star of the flick is nothing more than CGI and legend. Promoted far less than other big holiday blockbusters (I’m surprised I even caught the trailers, in-between scenes of a desperate running around in his flick), The Water Horse offers a fantastical alternative to family-friendly movies that deal exclusively in holiday laughs.

The low-key British flick is actually a period piece - set primarily during the WWII era - and told in flashback. Here’s how it goes: young boy wandering around the beach finds a strange egg and quite naturally takes it right home with him. (Every time I’ve ever found an odd, unidentified object which will no doubt hatch an unfamiliar creature, I’m itching to take it to my place of residence.) Anyway, the egg hatches to reveal, of course, .
