Box Office Breakdown: Number 1 for District 9

District 9 may not have have any big name stars and it may not be based on a story everyone knows, but it does have something no other film has this Monday: a first place finish.
Over the weekend, the R-rated actioner landed on Earth safely with over $37 million in ticket sales. The sci-fi entry also raked in one of the best per screen averages ($12,251) of any film currently in in theaters. (Sony Pictures Classics’ It Might Get Loud averaged $13,240 while in limited release.)
In the non-alien department, The Time Traveler’s Wife cornered the romantic genre with an $18.6 million total. Meanwhile, Vanessa Hudgens proved she’s nothing without her better half. The Disney star’s new film, Bandslam, failed to even crack the Top Ten. The teen comedy barely managed to gross over $2 million.

Box Office Breakdown: Wolverine Claws Its Way to the Top

Despite a growing list of hurdles (leaked footage, swine flu, mediocre reviews), X-Men Origins: Wolverine proved it was a force to be reckoned with last weekend. Although it failed to surpass X-Men: The Last Stand (that 2006 entry debuted at $122.9 million), the Fox feature trounced the competition with an $85.1 million open. In other words, Wolverine earned over $20 million more than the other Top Ten entries…combined.
Sitting far back in second place was Ghost of Girlfriends Past, Matthew McConaughey’s attempt to bring a little muscle into the box office. The romantic comedy, costarring Jennifer Garner, grossed $15.4 million on the weekend before Mother’s Day. (That’s less than a million more than what Made of Honor pulled in at this same time last year.) Meanwhile, last Friday’s only other wide release, Battle for Terra, raked in a disappointing $1.1 million for a 12th place finish.

Box Office Breakdown: Audiences Drawn to Obsessed

It was a battle between two Dreamgirls stars at the box office this weekend.
After back-to-back roles in music-related dramas, Beyonce Knowles proved she could deliver without having to sing a note. Obsessed, a thriller produced for approximately $20 million, pulled in nearly $29 million for a 1st place finish. The film, also featuring two NBC stars (The Office’s Idris Elba and Heroes’ Ali Larter), more than doubled last week’s champ, 17 Again.
Meanwhile, an Academy Award winner and an Iron Man joined forces for a surprising fourth place finish. The Soloist, costarring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr., didn’t even cross the $10 million mark. Although it was once considered as a pre-Oscars release, the film’s debut grossed less than last week’s nominee-filled entry, State of Play.

MacGyver: Now you didn’t think those MacGruber skits would lead nowhere, did ya? After seeing a renewed interest in the former ABC series (thanks NBC), New Line has decided to pounce on the golden opportunity. The story about a resourceful agent (Angus MacGyver) who improvised during critical moments will now be turned into a motion picture. No casting decisions or script have been completed.

Cast Set for ‘G.I. Joe’

Last year, Neil Estep and I addressed the upcoming G.I. Joe movie on an episode of FilmCrunch. Months later, we now know the names beefing up for this live-action adaptation.
It’s been announced that Dennis Quaid will be assuming the role of General Hawk while Channing Tatum (Step Up) will be putting on Duke Hauser’s fatigues. These two actors will join an already long list of players. Others confirmed for the futuristic war movie include Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, Sienna Miller (Factory Girl), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Lookout), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost), Said Taghmaoui (The Kite Runner) and Rachel Nichols (Alias).
The Paramount feature - based on the childhood action figure - is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 7, 2009. The movie will be co-produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the same man behind the other Hasbro-related film, Transformers.
