Winona Ryder Confirms Heathers Sequel

Christian Slater and Winona Ryder in Heathers

As a fellow Veronica, I couldn’t think of anything more exciting.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Heathers, the 1988 cult classic, was being adapted for the stage. Now it’s looking as if a sequel will be produced as well.

In an interview with Empire, confirmed that there is a plan to bring Veronica Sawyer and Jason “JD” Dean back to the big screen. “Whatever you hear, there is a sequel in the works. I swear to God,” she revealed to the magazine. “But for some reason the writer Dan Waters and director Michael Lehman don’t want to talk about it. I’ve been wanting to do a sequel forever. There is a story, and Christian [Slater] has agreed to come back as a kind of Obi-Wan character.”

This Week on HD DVD and Blu-ray: January 08, 2008

Zodiac HD DVDThis week marks the release of the first batch of high-definition DVDs since on-the-fence Warner landed decidedly on the Blu side; I must admit, as an HD DVD man, the day feels a bit colder than normal. But no matter—the format war is far from over.

On a lighter note, both formats have some exciting titles to speak of, including the Blu-ray release of one of my favorite movies from 2007, Sunshine; Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning film, The Pianist, on HD DVD; and the long-awaited special edition of David Fincher’s Zodiac, also on HD DVD. The DVD release from July contained nary a special feature, so this two-disc director’s cut ought to please those Fincher fans waiting for a decent version.

Check out the full list of high-def releases after the jump.

Piven, Shannon to Voice New Computer Animated Feature

Igor MovieJeremy Piven, Christian Slater, and Molly Shannon have signed on to voice the new CG movie, Igor.  The film centers on the aptly named Igor (Slater), a hunchback and servant to a cruel mad scientist, Dr. Glickenstein (John Cleese).  The annual Evil Science Fair is approaching in the land of Malaria, and Igor has dreams of winning.  In a twisted stroke of luck, Dr. Glickenstein dies and Igor decides to enter his own creation into the fair.  There’s just one problem: his creation, Eva (Shannon), isn’t scary.  In fact, she is the sweetest creature in the world and even aspires to become an actress.  With the help of a few of Dr. Glickenstein’s other creations – including a reanimated roadkill rabbit named Scamper (Steve Buscemi) – Igor must hide the doctor’s death, fool Eva into “acting” mean, and keep a nosy scientist, Dr. Schadenfruede (Piven), from messing everything up.  Igor will be written by Chris McKenna (American Dad) and directed by Anthony Leondis (Lilo & Stitch 2).  If Igor can match the intensity and fun of this year’s Monster House, we are certainly all for it.  Of course, an all-star cast doesn’t hurt either.  Look for it in theaters next year.
