First Look: Sandler, Spade, and Rock are Grown Ups

Adam Sandler’s latest film, Grown Ups, marks yet another reunion (nearly paralleling the story itself) with SNL veterans David Spade, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, and Rob Schneider. Oh, and for some reason, Salma Hayek signed up for this gig, too.
In the movie, Sandler meets up with his high school friends (Spade, Rock, Schneider, and Kevin James) during a July 4th weekend, where they discover some interesting things about their families (Schneider is married to an extreme cougar, James’s four year-old kid is still breast-fed). The comedy opens in theaters on July 25, 2010.

Little Fockers to explore death and divorce

Little Fockers will examine themes of death and divorce. The third movie in the comic franchise - starring Ben Stiller and Teri Polo - will focus on more serious topics, but writer John Hamburg promises to deal with them in a “really comic way”. He told IGN: “We’re catching up with these characters five years later and Pam and Greg have twins so they are dealing with that. And people are dealing with where they’re at in their lives, and themes of death and divorce and all these real things that as we get older, we start to think about, but in a really comic way.”
John also promised that Owen Wilson’s character Kevin Rawley will have an expanded role in the new film.

Kevin James: His Time to Shine?

The success of Paul Blart: Mall Cop over the weekend proves two things quite solidly: one, Kevin James, all by himself, can bring people out to the theaters and; two, I just can’t predict what moviegoers will watch. I have to admit, when I saw the promos for this one I was pretty much rolling my eyes - but in my defense I only saw the short version.
I shouldn’t have been surprised. After all, James always has been hilarious. The portly comedian first came to widespread public attention when he became TV’s King of Queens, a sitcom which celebrated a nine-year run on network. By any measure, that’s great success.

2009 Golden Globe Nominations (Film)

Although a looming SAG strike may threaten next year’s Academy Awards, the Golden Globes ceremony should finally go on as planned. The 66th annual event is scheduled to air on Sunday, January 11th, just 11 days before the Oscar nominations are announced.
Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from this year’s list of film nominees:
- Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button both led the field with five nominations each.
- Despite being chosen Best Film by the New York Film Critics, Sean Penn was the only nod Milk received by the HFPA.
- Meryl Streep earned two nominations for her work in Doubt and Mamma Mia.
- Kate Winslet is also up for two awards. Her films - Revolutionary Road and The Reader - are also up for Best Picture.
- Heath Ledger did get a posthumous nomination as expected.
- Although he was recently recognized for his acting work in Gran Torino, director Clint Eastwood (Changeling) was only acknowledged for his musical achievements.

Gregg, Rockwell, and Huston Bring Choke to Silver Screen

What do you get when you mix an elderly, female Tyler Durden with a choking con artist and a recovering compulsive masturbator? Clark Gregg’s dark, vulgar comedy with a surprisingly big heart, Choke.
Being a fan of the novel from which the film is based (written by Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk), I was overwhelmed with geeky fan-girl joy when I read that Choke was to be translated into film. That was three years ago. After nearly waiting an excruciating year after hearing about its premiere at Sundance, the indie film with an all-star cast helmed by writer/director/actor Clark Gregg is finally hitting theaters this weekend, and it certainly will not disappoint movie-goers. That is, unless, the trailer fooled you into believing that the film is a romantic comedy.
Romantic? In a punk rock way. Comedic? Most definitely. Chick flick? Far from.
Regardless of whether or not you’re a fan of the novel, Sam Rockwell (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) wonderfully brings Victor Mancini to life as the med school drop-out sex addict who pays for his mother’s hospital bill by choking in restaurants. Anjelica Huston (The Royal Tenenbaums) and Kelly MacDonald (No Country for Old Men) round off the supporting actresses as Mancini’s mother and the new, attractive doctor who assumes care for her. Clark himself makes an appearance as High Lord Charlie, Mancini’s anal-retentive boss at a colonial theme park, where Mancini works as a historical interpreter (a job, as we’re reminded in the film, which is not to be confused with a tour guide).

See Lindsay Lohan’s Return in Labor Pains Trailer

Lindsay Lohan - whose last two films were the barely seen Chapter 27 and the Razzie-winner I Know Who Killed Me - is scheduled to make her big screen return next year in Labor Pains.
In the comedy, Lohan plays a publishing house assistant who feigns pregnancy to avoid being fired. Cheryl Hines, Chris Parnell, Janeane Garofalo and American Idol‘s Kevin Covais co-star.
Labor Pains is set to be released sometime in 2009. Until then, Lindsay Lohan will be getting some small screen time during her five-episode arc on Ugly Betty.
Pineapple Express Meets Disinterest at Comic-Con

While it never appears to be a good sign when at least a third of an audience leaves prior to one’s panel at Comic-Con, I am definitely rooting for Pineapple Express when it hits theaters in a couple weeks!
As depressing as that can be for anyone at such a hyped event, I would venture to say that Judd Apatow‘s latest project failed to meet success at the event due to misplacement. I mean, promoting a stoner movie to die-hard comic book fans? These are audiences who went crazy last year over The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk, and this year with Watchmen—not exactly the type whose favorite movies include Dazed and Confused or Dude, Where’s My Car?.
