‘Evil Dead’ Remake Promises to Be the Scariest Film You’ll See

The folks behind the Evil Dead remake are pretty confident that the new film will scare your socks skin off - according to the film's new poster, anyway.
With folks from the original on board (Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are producing) and Jennifer's Body writer Diablo Cody aiding with the script, perhaps the new version won't be all that bad. Then again, remaking such a cult-classic like Evil Dead is risky business! The film hits theaters April 12, 2013.

Lily Collins Set For Evil Dead Remake

Lily Collins is set to star in the Evil Dead remake. The Mirror Mirror star - daughter of singer Phil Collins - is being lined up to take on the role of Mia, who is one of the five friends who decide to take an ill-advised trip to a remote cabin in the woods.
Just like the original film, the group of pals discover a dusty tomb known as The Necronomicon, from which reading a passage out loud results in chaos with the release of flesh-possessing demons. Lily's character has recently suffered a drug overdose and is looking forward to a weekend of detox at the cabin. So when she starts claiming to have been attacked by the trees outside, her friends just assume it's some sort of post-traumatic paranoia.
The remake of the 1981 film will be directed by Fede Alvarez from a script co-written with Rodo Sayagues and Diablo Cody, Bloody Disgusting reports. It is due for release in April 2013.

When an Oscar-winning screenwriter says “Mariah Carey just gave the most awesome acceptance speech of all time,” it’s bound to get people interested.
So when Diablo Cody (Juno) tweeted that message last night, a million different scenarios ran through my head. Did Mariah accept the award on behalf of “all the Precious girls out there”? Did she say “I never thought a girl who starred in Glitter would ever earn anything but a Razzie”?
Fortunately, my guesses were nothing close to what really happened at the 2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival. While accepting the award for Breakthrough Actress, the Precious actress made us all think back to that wild interview with Carson Daly a long time ago. But in this case, I think she was simply having a very good time.

Diablo Cody Calls Adolescence Horrifying

Diablo Cody says she drew inspiration for her latest movie Jennifer’s Body - about a dead cheerleader who returns to kill and eat her classmates - on the struggles and fears of growing up.
“When I started the script, I was thinking about what’s scary to me and I decided, girls are scary! One of the first lines of the movie is ‘Hell is teenagers.’ If you think about all the subgenres of horror - vampires, werewolves, zombies - none of these transformations are as profound as puberty. The experience of becoming an adolescent is horrifying,” the screenwriter said.
Diablo also admitted she drew inspiration from people she knew at school when coming up with her lead character, who is played in the film by Megan Fox.

First Look: Megan Fox Attacks in Jennifer’s Body

If you like seeing Megan Fox run away from killer robots, it might also excite you to see the beauty as a killer herself.
In Jennifer’s Body, the actress stars as a possessed cheerleader who likes to tear apart high school boys. Mamma Mia‘s Amanda Seyfriend plays Needy Lesnicky, Jennifer Check’s best friend, while Adam Brody (The O.C.) sports eyeliner as the lead singer of a rock band.
The dark comedy, written by Juno‘s Diablo Cody, opens on September 18.
Unboxing: The Official ‘Juno’ Hamburger Phone

It isn’t too often we here at FilmCrunch get to do an official unboxing like our sister site, Unboxing.com. But I kind of think this actually one-ups their normal gadgetry, allowing you to get your vicarious thrills
doubly—it’s cool and it’s related to one of this year’s best films, Juno. Case in point, I give you the Official Juno Hamburger Phone. Yes, that so-ugly-and-weird-that-it’s-cute-and-I-actually-really-want-one phone was handed to me as part of the film’s promotion, and I couldn’t be more excited about it.
I haven’t had the chance to use it yet—I don’t have a landline—but I hear it works about as well as the one from the movie. Remind me not to use it the next time I call my local abortion clinic.

2008 Academy Award Nominations

The nominations for the 80th Annual Academy Awards were announced bright and early Tuesday morning from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Assuming the ceremony goes on as scheduled, you can see the live broadcast Sunday, February 24th on ABC.
Notable additions/omissions from today’s announcement:
- Based on the major categories alone, it looks like Michael Clayton may be the frontrunner. It received six nominations.
- Aside from one nod each in the Best Supporting Actor category, both Into the Wild and Charlie Wilson’s War were virtually shut out from the top prizes.
- Sweeney Todd - winner for Best Comedy/Musical at the Golden Globes - was shut out for Best Picture. Johnny Depp’s nom was the only major accolade for the film.
- A much-deserving Amy Adams did not receive a nom nor did her film, Enchanted.
- Atonement - the movie with the most nominations at the Globes - only received 3 in the major areas. The two main stars (Knightley, McAvoy) were also shut out.
- Cate Blanchett earned two nominations this year (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I’m Not There).
- Angelina Jolie was not recognized for her heartbreaking performance in A Mighty Heart.

Proposed New Year’s Resolutions for Movie Studio Executives

Fa la la la la … la la la la
And there must be no shortage of jolliness for big-name film studios as we enter the last days of the year—2007 has been one of the most lucrative in film history. But after the holiday parties end, and the final box-office spreadsheets have been tucked under the pillow (or thrown on the fire), the time comes for rebirth and renewal. After all, the target demographic will be looking for something new, and the critics certainly weren’t impressed with much of this year’s fare. Perhaps everyone can be happy in 2008, as the medium returns to its glory days of content-rich, engaging filmmaking.
Alright, you people aren’t buyin’ it.

2008 Golden Globe Nominations (Film)

Assuming the ongoing writers’ strike doesn’t put a wrench into everyone’s plans, the 65th Annual Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled to air on Sunday, Jan. 13th. (The NBC telecast will come just 9 days prior to the Academy Award nominations.)
Here are the most notable omissions/additions in this year’s list of film honorees:
- Atonement led the nominations with seven; Charlie Wilson’s War came in second with five.
- Musicals (Sweeney Todd, Across the Universe, Hairspray) dominated the Comedy/Musical category.
- Cate Blanchett received two acting nominations (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I’m Not There).
- Philip Seymour Hoffman was also a double-nominee (The Savages, Charlie Wilson’s War)
- Hoffman’s Savages co-star, Laura Linney, was not nominated for her performance.
- The Kite Runner was nominated in the Foreign Film category.
- Javier Bardem was the only actor nominated from No Country for Old Men.
- Into the Wild was left out of all major categories.
