Academy Makes Changes to Best Song Category

If you’ve ever felt yourself wondering, “How many songs could Beyonce possibly sing during this awards show?” - this news is for you.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made a change that will go into effect before next year’s Oscars ceremony. From this point forward, no one movie will be able to dominate the Academy Awards’ Best Song category. While producers can submit as many tunes as they like, only two songs per film will be allowed for nomination.

Jennifer Hudson Joins ‘Sex And The City’ Movie

Jennifer Hudson is proving (to many jealous women out there) that her career did not peak with a silly little Oscar. The Academy Award winner has now been cast in the big screen version of Sex and the City.
The former American Idol contestant will be joining Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis in the Big Apple. After months of talk, production on the HBO show-turned film will finally begin next week.
While plot details have yet been leaked, we do know that Jennifer will play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant (Louise). Any guesses out there as to what that means? Did Carrie become a full-time writer at Vogue? Does this mean she will actually be working outside of her apartment…in an office?

FilmCrunch 035: Dreamgirls Review

Veronica Santiago and Neil Estep report back with their review of the Academy Award-winning Dreamgirls:
Set in the turbulent early 1960s to mid-70s, the tale follows the rise of a trio of women—Effie, Deena and Lorrell—who have formed a promising girl group called The Dreamettes. At a talent competition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor, Jr., who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: to become the back-up singers for headliner James “Thunder” Early. Curtis gradually takes control of the girls’ look and sound, eventually giving them their own shot in the spotlight as The Dreams. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Though the Dreams become a cross-over phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune may be higher than they ever imagined.

2007 Academy Award Nominations

Somewhere out there director Bill Condon is trying to wake up from a very bad dream…
Just less than 24 hours ago, I was just telling my cohort Neil Estep that Dreamgirls would be nominated for Best Picture. Thankfully, no money was involved. Apparently what I should have said was, “Given that the film won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical, I think it will probably earn the most nominations this year—but not be nominated for Best Picture.” My theory? The voters were so Dreamgirled-out by the time they got to that part of the ballot…
The biggest shocker of the day? Probably. But there were plenty others. And may I saw how excited I am! Here are some of the more notable additions/omissions from this morning:
- We have one less Leo DiCaprio nomination in the Best Actor Category (in Blood Diamond, out The Departed) making room for Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson. Woo hoo! Is it weird that I’m excited about this nomination…even though I’ve never seen the movie? But I’ve heard so much about it and have been waiting anxiously for the DVD to come out on on Feb. 13th. I just love it when underdogs are recognized. Could this be a surprise win ala Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry) or Adrian Brody (The Pianist)?

Box Office Breakdown

Although theater audiences were not offered much new to watch over the four-day weekend, I must say that I was bit surprised as to how the box office totals shook out. I was certain that Primeval would reign supreme. I mean—when when does a movie about a serial-killing crocodile not come out on top?? And despite Madonna’s participation, I thought Arthur and the Invisibles would place higher than 9th. Parents are always desperate to find something for their rug rats, right?
