+ It's a good thing that Jennifer Lawrence's white dress from American Hustle only cost $3.99 for a yard of the fabric: costume designer Michael Wilkinson revealed that the actress got into some trouble eating Doritos while in costume. Yeah, we're not surprised, either.
+ Disney/Marvel announced that the sequel to Thor: The Dark World has been greenlit, adding that Christopher Yost (who co-wrote Thor: The Dark World) and Craig Kyle (who produced both Thor films) are set to write it.
+ Twilight alum Nikki Reed has been cast in horror film Email, which will be set in Singapore. Perhaps this latest American-take-on-Asian-horror project will serve as her springboard onto bigger projects, as it seemed to do for Naomi Watts (almost forgot that she was in The Ring, eh?).
+ Forest Whitaker will be taking a step behind the camera to direct Lionsgate's adaptation of the best-selling book The Shack.

Guy Pearce Lands Iron Man Role

Apparently some roles are just too good to turn down, even if you're taking a break from acting.
Guy Pearce has landed a role in Iron Man 3. The Lockout actor is in final talks to star in the forthcoming superhero sequel - which sees Robert Downey Jr. return as inventor Tony Stark and his titular alter-ego - and would play geneticist Aldrich Killian, Variety reports.
The villain is expected involved in the spread of a virus through nanobots because the film is loosely based on the 2005 Extremis comic book series. News of the story arc may disappoint some fans, as it had previously been speculated the next movie in the series would see the titular character take on his original arch enemy the Mandarin, a wealthy Chinese scientist and martial arts expert who backed the warlord who imprisoned Stark.
Jon Favreau - who directed the first two films in the franchise - had previously expressed an interest in exploring the character, but he has moved on from the series, with Shane Black at the helm of Iron Man 3. Shane is also co-writing the script with Drew Pearce. Production is set to begin in May, and the film has a scheduled release date of May 3 2013.
Guy Pearce Taking Acting Break

Guy Pearce is taking a break from acting.
The 44-year-old actor - who has starred in The King's Speech, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and The Hurt Locker in recent years - admits he has been struggling to read scripts in the last few months and has decided to quit acting for a while.
"I'm taking six months off, yeah. I've worked way too much in the last two years and I'm just sort of blank. I read scripts and glaze over them at the moment. I need to just kind of go and be me for a while," he said.
The Australian star - who also has a part in Ridley Scott's much anticipated Alien prequel Prometheus - thinks he has run out of energy to take on new parts: "You just get to a point where you become vacuous. I just don't have any energy to be anyone else other than me. So yeah it's really important. People sort of say, but just read this one script. I'm like no, there's no point in me reading this script, because I'll resent it."

Box Office Breakdown: Gran Torino Expands to a Win

He may have lost out to Bruce Springsteen last night, but Clint Eastwood was still a big winner this weekend. After 4 weeks in limited theaters, the 78-year-old’s film became the top movie in wide release.
Eastwood’s directorial project not only pulled in $29.4 million over the last three days ($40.5 million to date), it outranked the vehicles from Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Will Smith. Gran Torino also earned the best per screen average of any charter in the Top Ten.
Despite opening on approximately 600 more screens than the first place finisher, #2’s Bride Wars grossed nearly $4000 less per theater. The Kate Hudson-Anne Hathaway comedy also averaged less than #3’s The Unborn.

Box Office Breakdown: Marley & Me Ends 2008 on Top

Aside from a few changes at the bottom of this week’s Top Ten, every single movie remained planted in their positions from last Monday. Since Friday’s new entries (Good, Defiance) were only offered in limited release, there really wasn’t much of a battle.
Over the last three days, Marley & Me tacked on another $24 million and officially crossed the $100 million mark. The Fox adaptation became the 25th film from 2008 to accomplish that. Meanwhile, the only new charter was #10’s Slumdog Millionaire. Although it was only shown in 612 theaters (that’s down two from last week), the Fox Searchlight feature helped push The Spirit down to #13. The probable Oscar contender also earned a better per screen average than all the films ahead of it.

When it comes to the box office, Jennifer Aniston has no problem pushing best friends (Courteney Cox), exes (Brad Pitt) or former leading men (Jim Carrey) aside.
After a record-breaking Christmas Day, Marley & Me pulled in approximately $36.4 million over the last three days. The PG-rated film, which earned nearly $51 million since December 25, gave Aniston bragging rights and Owen Wilson his best Friday-Sunday gross ever.
Although he eventually lost out to Jen, Brad Pitt really had nothing to complain about. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the weekend’s #3 finisher, had the 2nd best ($12 million) Christmas day opening. Meanwhile, Bedtime Stories - starring Adam Sandler and Courteney Cox - now ranks 3rd ($10.6 million) on the all-time Dec. 25 debuts list.

Box Office Breakdown: Burn After Reading Smokes Past Competition

Around this same time last year, Tyler Perry was beating George Clooney in a battle at the box office. Now the Sexiest Man Alive is having his day.
This past weekend, cineplexes were kept busy with a handful of new releases. Although each film had a chance of reaching #1, Burn After Reading - starring Clooney, Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand - emerged as the eventual winner. But the news wasn’t so bad for the other three contenders. Theatergoers clearly starving for fresh material placed all four wide release entries into the chart’s four top slots.
