Justin Timberlake Indirectly Funds British Horror Film
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Horror, Independent, Celeb News, Filmmaking, Rumors, Upcoming Releases
Justin Timberlake helped fund Colin, an ultra-low budget British horror movie, without even knowing it!
Marc Price, who claims that he made his debut film for just $70, said he never bought any make-up for the zombies and instead relied on what his makeup artist friends could donate from jobs where they hadn’t used everything up.
“The girl who was our head of makeup was cool because she was doing a lot of pop promos at the time—she didn’t need much liquid latex for Justin Timberlake so she was able to leave quite a lot with us.”
Marc also said his team had a few run-ins with the general public when they were filming some of the film’s gorier scenes: “The most crazy was when we had a scene with a guy having his face ripped off. I had the video camera in one hand and I was ripping off the face with the other hand, then all of a sudden this woman peered over, and said, ‘excuse me…’—she ignored the camera and ignored the fact I was ripping his face off, she thought it was real—and she said ‘excuse me are you ok? Do you want any help?’”
Colin is due in theaters on October 23 and is available on DVD on October 26.

Rob Zombie Set to Remake The Blob
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Weinstein Company, Classics, Horror, Remakes, Science Fiction, Celeb News, Filmmaking, Upcoming Releases
Despite hope that Rob Zombie gravitate towards original projects, the musician-turned-director has recently announced that his next venture is to re-make the 1958 horror film The Blob.
Already set to begin production this upcoming spring, the news came shortly before Zombie’s Halloween II was killed at the box office.
While Zombie is a fan of the original, which centers around an alien object that consumes humans on Earth, he’s not entirely keen on a carbon copy remake: “My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing—that’s the first thing I want to change. That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.”
With the $30 million budget model similar to District 9 and Cloverfield, the Dimension film is expected to obtain an R-rating.

Robert England Talks ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Remake, ‘Heroes’
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: New Line, Warner Bros, Action, Horror, Remakes, Casting, Upcoming Releases
From what started simply from an infantile obsession with Johnny Depp (note: still very much suffering from), I was quickly hooked to Wes Craven’s classic A Nightmare on Elm Street series for as long as I can remember. Considering horror favorites like Halloween, The Hills Have Eyes, Friday the 13th, and more recently, The Last House on the Left have all been brought to the silver screen a second time around, it was only a matter of time before Michael Bay got his hands on the Freddy Kruger films.
The man beneath Freddy’s flame-broiled façade is none other than Robert Englund, whom I last saw on a very interesting poster for Zombie Strippers! (I am so not kidding about that, either). Unfortunately, he will neither be reprising his role nor making a cameo in the upcoming remake. He did, however, speak very highly of Jackie Earle Haley portraying Freddy Kruger and his hopefulness for the reinvention of the horror that made him a household name:
“Well, they’re shooting as we speak in Chicago and it’s a real interesting cast. The actor playing Freddy, Jackie Earle Haley, I was a big fan of his as far back as a movie called, Breaking Away... I think because Jackie’s not real big, you know, I like the idea of his kind of energy and size. I always saw Freddy as kind of like an angry junkyard dog. I think there is something about Jackie’s size that will really lend itself to a kind of impishness and that kind of energy that I hope they let him bring to the role… I hope they don’t completely mirror the original. I think it would be smart of them to maybe change the wardrobe a bit. You know, modify the claw and glove a little perhaps, I think if they’re going to have the fun of remaking it.”

Sorority Row and Destination Mark Reemergence of Bad Teen Horror
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: New Line, Horror, Mystery, Remakes, Thrillers, Casting, Trailers, Upcoming Releases
As much as raping Asian horror films like The Eye and One Missed Call irked me, I’m fairly sure that Sorority Row and The Final Destination (trailer after the jump) are leaving me even more distressed at the fate of American horror.
By the looks of the trailer, the remake of 1983’s The House on Sorority Row strikes me as a bad mix of I Know What You Did Last Summer and The House Bunny (seriously, what is Rumer Willis‘s character from that film doing in this one?). I’m happy to see Carrie Fisher get work, although I find it disheartening that the only gig she can get is this egregiously-looking thriller. Then again, this is a Summit production…

Will Lindsay Lohan Be Moving to Elm Street?

UPDATE: Another producer on the film is now denying that the report is true.
Is Lindsay Lohan setting herself up to be the next scream queen?
According to Just Jared, the 22-year-old will be following up her Razzie Award-winning performance in I Know Who Killed Me with another horror film. Lohan has just agreed to star in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.
“We were lucky to receive a call from Jason Weinberg, Lindsay’s manager,” producer Andrew Form told JustJared.com. “He called us to tell us that Lindsay was very interested in the film and wanted to be a part of it. We called Jason back after Wesley Strick finished the script and asked if Lindsay wanted to look at the first draft. She looked it over and loved it. She thought this was the perfect vehicle for her.”

Jason Voorhees is Back for More in Friday the 13th
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: New Line, Horror, Sequels, Trailers, Upcoming Releases
When it comes to horror movies, Michael Bay if clearly out of fresh ideas.
The man behind The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), The Amityville Horror (2005), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) and The Hitcher (2007) is back at it again. Come 2009, we’ll get to see the latest remake (or “re-imagining”) the producer has kindly churned out for us.
Although there have already been 11 installments in the slasher franchise, Michael felt it was time to update Friday the 13th once again. Unfortunately, I’m having a hard seeing how this trip to Camp Crystal Lake is going to be any different from the rest. (Did I mention Bay is also planning to bring A Nightmare on Elm Street back to the screen?)
Friday the 13th will take another stab at the box office on February 13th, 2009.
Box Office Breakdown: High School Musical at the Top of the Class

This past week, the multiplexes had a little bit of something for everyone: politics, animals, music, dancing, thrillers, Oscar contenders and even horror. Not surprisingly, this meant a lot of dollars were shelled out in return.
As expected, the big screen debut of High School Musical 3 had tweeners (and their loving parents) all atwitter. Thanks to a $42 million debut, the G-rated film officially became the best musical opener of all time. (Mamma Mia! - with its $27.8 million - was the previous leader.)
Meanwhile, a film on the other end of the ratings spectrum was scaring up some decent dollars of its own. Saw V, which probably could have waited to premiere on Halloween, took in approximately $30 million over the last three days. Although it was pitted against the highly-anticipated Disney sequel, the movie carved out its own audience and raised first place-worthy numbers. Although the series is currently on its fifth life, the 2008 installment came within $4 million dollars of Saw III, the franchise’s best performer to date.

Box Office Breakdown: Max Payne Outvotes W for #1
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, Disney, Fox Searchlight, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Drama, Family, Horror, Political, Romance, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists

Even though Josh Brolin was the host of last Saturday’s SNL, it was Mark Wahlberg - a minor player on that same show - who ended up on top.
This past weekend, Max Payne finally managed to do what no other movie has done yet: take Beverly Hills Chihuahua down. The video game adaptation earned $17.6 million putting nearly $6 million between itself and the family flick.
Surprisingly, a whole Oprah show dedicated to The Secret Life of Bees couldn’t provide that star-studded cast enough buzz. Despite a $10.5 million take, the drama still placed behind the four-legged film. (Bee did, though, earn more per theater than any Top Ten entry.) Meanwhile, Oliver Stone’s latest project did a respectable job for a politically-themed movie. W. also raked in $10.5 million this weekend, narrowly missing third place.

Box Office Breakdown: Chihuahua Refuses to Kneel Down
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: DreamWorks, Disney, Miramax, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Drama, Family, Horror, Period, Religious, Romance, Comedy, Sports, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists, New Releases

Put a couple of Oscar-nominees in a Middle East-based film and what do you get? Answer: Third place.
Despite the star-wattage in Ridley Scott’s new CIA movie, Body of Lies failed to meet expectations this weekend. The Russell Crowe/Leonardo DiCaprio thriller pulled in a surprising $12.9 million for Warner Bros. That turnout is especially low given the film’s reported $100 million budget.
On the flip side, an entry with a relatively small price tag did better than Lies this week. Quarantine, Sony Screen Gem’s horror contribution, earned $14.2 million and a second place finish. In just three days, the film has already surpassed its $12 million production costs.
