DVD Review: The Number 23

The slickly-directed and highly-stylized Joel Schumacher film about an ordinary man’s infatuation with an extraordinary number was released on DVD this week. Starring Jim Carrey and Virginia Madsen, The Number 23 delves deep into the psyche of Walter Sparrow, a man all too ordinary, and a small red book that enters his life. The thin, disheveled paperback tells the story of Fingerling, a detective whose encounter with the eponymous number grows into an obsession beyond the bounds of logic — an obsession that begins to take hold of Sparrow himself.
Although the film looks beautiful in every way, and the performances hold up enough to keep one intrigued, The Number 23 attempts to invoke malevolence from mathematical coincidence and superstition, and neither become anything more for it’s audience.

Mike Myers Gets Mitty

Mike Myers is the most recent name to be attached to the movie project The Secret Life of Water Mitty, a re-make of a 1947 movie of the same name. This time, the film has been picked up by 20th Century Fox. Over the years, big names like Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, Owen Wilson, and Whoopi Goldberg (as “Martha Mitty” in a female-oriented version of the original) have all been attached to the project, one that’s been a long time in the making. This current incarnation will be written by Jay Kogen (Frasier, Malcolm in the Middle) and produced by Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. In the past, directors Steven Spielberg and Chuck Russell were said to be attached to the project at different times.
Now, it’s time for Mike Myers to take the leading role as Walter Mitty. The last time the project came up was 2005, with Owen Wilson set to take the lead, and Paramount scheduled to lend their studios for production. The movie was put on hold, however, when the studio failed to cast a female lead for the film. The film has been given the green light again…will this finally be Mitty’s year?

Ghost Rider and Wild Hogs step aside. Throngs of men in need of a testosterone-laden movie were apparently craving more than just motorcycles. According to the latest box office numbers, what they really needed were swords. And blood. And Spartan women.
Trapped inside a crowded theater this weekend, I knew 300 would be successful. But who could have guessed it would be this big?? The latest movie to be based on a Frank Miller graphic novel raked in nearly $71 million. That’s the largest opening for a movie in March…ever. Additionally, it was the 3rd largest opening for an ‘R’ rated movie (right behind The Matrix Reloaded and The Passion of the Christ).

The Number 23 Review: Doesn’t Add Up

When Walter Sparrow, a bashful Animal Control officer, happens upon a mysterious book entitled The Number 23, his world view is suddenly turned upside-down. Every page turned in the ominous-looking novel becomes another parallel to Sparrow’s own life and past experiences. When Sparrow realizes that the ‘23’ obsession that haunts the book’s protagonist is becoming his own, he must suspend his own disbelief, pacify his worried family, and follow numerically complex and morbid clues to find the answer to the mystery. Though sporadically intense and marginally intriguing, The Number 23 is just a mishmash of special effects and plot twists surrounding an obsession that never becomes very interesting.
The Number 23 stars Jim Carrey and Virginia Madsen and is directed by Joel Schumacher. Rated R.
