Box Office Breakdown: Ashton Kutcher Drives Past Speed Racer

Despite arresting visuals and a $120 million budget, the Wachowski brothers were unable to bring Speed Racer to life. The Warner Bros. movie - which many had already predicted would fall behind Iron Man - did even worse than originally thought. At one point, it was believed the anime adaptation would debut in 2nd place. Unfortunately, the final box office numbers placed the PG film in third.
Meanwhile, What Happens in Vegas became the second wedding-themed entry in the recent Top Ten. The comedy, starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher, replaced Made of Honor as the go to ‘chick flick’ of the week. The movie grossed $20.1 million, a slim $1.6 million more than Speed.

Box Office Breakdown: Iron Man Strikes Gold

Where exactly can the summer box office go from here?
This past weekend, Iron Man blasted into theaters in a big way. The comic book adaptation raked in a whopping $102 million putting an $87 million difference between itself and its nearest competitor. The PG-13 film officially became the 10th best opener of all time and had the second best premiere for any non-sequel. (Spider-Man grossed $114.8 million back in 2002.)

Box Office Breakdown: Women Rule with Baby Mama

Although 30 Rock still struggles to compete on Thursdays, Tina Fey’s Baby Mama had no problem topping the competition. The film, co-starring Amy Poehler, earned $17.4 million and made a showing for women everywhere. When’s the last time a movie with two female leads debuted at #1?
Interestingly enough, Mama‘s screen average ($6845) was outdone by another female-centric movie: The She Found Me. The movie that was directed and written by star Helen Hunt earned $8066 per screen this weekend. Fairly impressive considering Found, also featuring Bette Midler, opened in 44th place.
Friday’s other big entry - Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay - came in second place with a $14.9 million take. Surprisingly, that gross nearly equals what the original film raked in during it’s total run.

Favorable reviews and Judd Apatow’s association helped Forgetting Sarah Marshall nab a second place finish this past weekend. While some may have expected the adult comedy to debut at #1, the movie was unfortunately inaccessible to large segment of ticket buyers.
Meanwhile, Marshall‘s R-rated raunch allowed fellow new entry The Forbidden Kingdom to edge right past it. The action film, which brought martial artists Jackie Chan and Jet Li together for the first time, earned $21.4 million—just enough for the win.

Despite George Clooney’s role as actor and director, Hollywood’s powerful A-lister still couldn’t get his film all the way to the end zone.
Leatherheads, also starring John Krasinski and Renee Zellweger, came up short this past weekend found itself in third place. Although it looked like the football film was going to fare much better, Nim’s Island made a last minute score to snag second place. Previous winner, 21, made it two weeks in a row even with a $10 million loss.
The only other new film to enter the recent Top Ten was The Ruins. The film adaptation of the Scott Smith book scared up just over $8 million.

As the 80th Annual Academy Awards inch ever closer, some of us are still scrambling to see the contenders in question before the big night. Those anxious to see their favorites before the inevitable acceptance speech or scowl-behind-forced-smile have the chance to watch a few in high-def this week.
On HD DVD is Elizabeth: The Golden Age, nominated for Cate Blanchett’s performance and the opulent costumes. On Blu-ray are Across the Universe, nominated for its costumes, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, nominated for Casey Affleck’s supporting performance.

Golden Globe Nominations (Film)

Assuming the ongoing writers’ strike doesn’t put a wrench into everyone’s plans, the 65th Annual Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled to air on Sunday, Jan. 13th. (The NBC telecast will come just 9 days prior to the Academy Award nominations.)
Here are the most notable omissions/additions in this year’s list of film honorees:
- Atonement led the nominations with seven; Charlie Wilson’s War came in second with five.
- Musicals (Sweeney Todd, Across the Universe, Hairspray) dominated the Comedy/Musical category.
- Cate Blanchett received two acting nominations (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I’m Not There).
- Philip Seymour Hoffman was also a double-nominee (The Savages, Charlie Wilson’s War)
- Hoffman’s Savages co-star, Laura Linney, was not nominated for her performance.
- The Kite Runner was nominated in the Foreign Film category.
- Javier Bardem was the only actor nominated from No Country for Old Men.
- Into the Wild was left out of all major categories.

Whether you’ve made the choice and actually picked a side in this format war, one thing can be agreed upon by all sides—this is a good week for high-definition.
It so happens that Warner Home Entertainment has yet to pick a side in this battle of video/audio quality—a decision that, when the time comes, could end the war for good. For now, however, they are throwing down some pretty good releases to please everyone, and this week is no exception.
The late Stanley Kubrick, idiosyncratic director of some of America’s most cherished cinema, is honored this week with the release of a few classics in dual format—finally, we can all see Jack Torrance’s nose hairs as he axes the hotel door and screams his classic “Here’s Johnny!” After all, Halloween is quick approaching, and a high-def copy of The Shining might make the perfect late-night creepfest.
