VIDEO: 2010 Minus the Special Effects

Cheesy special effects. The reason some of you are eager to see , and the reason I’m staying far away. But is the movie really as bad as it appears to me? Could there be more to Roland Emmerich’s feature than just the visuals?

In this clip for the film, (most) of the trailer’s distractions are stripped away leaving the screenplay in the forefront. Unfortunately, the only thing making up for John Cusack’s overacting is the surprise cameo at the end.

(BTW - you can compare this version to the original one after the jump.)

Box Office Breakdown: Eagle Eye Soars to #1

Eagle Eye

Despite mixed reviews for his latest film, Shia LaBeouf once again proved he has box office appeal. , a film from Disturbia‘s D.J. Caruso, earned $29.2 million over the past three days and the #1 spot. Even a Friday night presidential debate couldn’t stop the thriller from putting nearly $16 million between itself and Nights in Rodanthe, this weekend’s #2. Although Nights - the third pairing for Diane Lane and Richard Gere - took in $13.4 million, the romantic drama did almost $1 million less than 2002’s Unfaithful.

- a faith-based film starring Kirk Cameron - surprised many with its 4th place finish. Although it was only available in 839 theaters, the movie had an impressive $8111 per screen average. Meanwhile, two films outside the Top Ten boasted averages over the $10,000 mark. The Duchess (ranked #13) pulled in $10,238 per theater while Ed Harris’ Appaloosa (#35) did slightly better with $10,469.

Here are some possible suggestions for your upcoming weekend:

Casting Corner: Ed Helms, Kate Hudson, Woody Harrelson

Ed Helms

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

Assuming negotiations end well, will be temporarily setting aside his stapler to star in a new Todd Phillips (School for Scoundrels) film. The role would be The Office‘s star first lead in a motion picture.

In Hangover, Helms and Bradley Cooper (Alias) will play two of three friends who lose a groom-to-be during a Vegas bachelor party-outing. No actor has yet been cast as the third bud.

Although a release date hasn’t been announced, the comedy is currently entering pre-production. In the meantime, fans of Helms should hurry up to see before it disappears from theaters.

*limited and/or gradual release

See a Sultrier Side to Hilary Duff

Hilary DuffThe Lizzie McGuire star isn’t Disney’s property anymore. will soon be steaming it up on the big screen, in a role which could propel her out of the lighthearted teen parts of her past.

Duff plays a pop star in War, Inc, but there’s nothing bubble-gum about her performance - at least, not in the clip that’s making the rounds on the Internet. In the film, plays a hit man who is using Duff as a cover story. Marisa Tomei and Ben Kingsley co-star. The movie will hit theaters May 23, but the clip of Duff’s scorpion scene is available right now.

This Week on HD DVD and Blu-ray: January 08, 2008

Zodiac HD DVDThis week marks the release of the first batch of high-definition DVDs since on-the-fence Warner landed decidedly on the Blu side; I must admit, as an HD DVD man, the day feels a bit colder than normal. But no matter—the format war is far from over.

On a lighter note, both formats have some exciting titles to speak of, including the Blu-ray release of one of my favorite movies from 2007, Sunshine; Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning film, The Pianist, on HD DVD; and the long-awaited special edition of David Fincher’s Zodiac, also on HD DVD. The DVD release from July contained nary a special feature, so this two-disc director’s cut ought to please those Fincher fans waiting for a decent version.

Check out the full list of high-def releases after the jump.
