Box Office Breakdown: Record Showing for 007

In the battle of Bond vs. Bourne, Jason won out this time…though not by much.
Although it was initially believed Quantum of Solace would break the $70 million mark, the final numbers for the Sony/MGM film came up slightly short. The 22nd Bond installment hauled in $67.5 million this weekend, just under $2 million shy of the debut for The Bourne Ultimatum. (The 2007 premiered to $69.3 million.)
But don’t feeling sorry for Daniel Craig. The actor has helped to revitalize the franchise in a big way. Quantum officially just became the best opener of all the 007 films. (Die Another Day grossed $47.1 million back in 2002.) The movie is also on pace to to beat the theatrical run record set by Casino Royale. (The 2006 film eventually pocketed $167.4 million domestically.)

Getting Into Character: Penelope Cruz and Daniel Day-Lewis in Nine

Here’s a snapshot of Penelope Cruz and Daniel Day-Lewis in Nine, Rob Marshall’s (Chicago) latest contribution to the musical genre.
In the movie, Daniel plays a director (Guido Contini) who has to deal with the many women - a wife, a mistress, a deceased mother, a muse - in his life. The Broadway adaptation also features Nicole Kidman, Fergie, Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren in the supporting roles.
The Weinstein Company production is scheduled for release sometime in 2009.

New Quantum of Solace Trailer

Back in June, the Quantum of Solace producers gave us our first glimpse of the next 007 installment. Several months later, our interest is renewed.
This new clip moves past the original trailer’s dark and emotional tone and dives right into the series’ nuts and bolts: the bad guys and the Bond women.
Quantum of Solace - originally scheduled to open on November 7 - will now debut one week later (Nov. 14).
Casting Corner: Ed Helms, Kate Hudson, Woody Harrelson

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:
Assuming negotiations end well, Ed Helms will be temporarily setting aside his stapler to star in a new Todd Phillips (School for Scoundrels) film. The role would be The Office‘s star first lead in a motion picture.
In Hangover, Helms and Bradley Cooper (Alias) will play two of three friends who lose a groom-to-be during a Vegas bachelor party-outing. No actor has yet been cast as the third bud.
Although a release date hasn’t been announced, the comedy is currently entering pre-production. In the meantime, fans of Helms should hurry up to see Meet Dave before it disappears from theaters.

Quantum of Solace Trailer

Of all the sequels releasing in 2008, there are only two that really have me excited: The Dark Knight and Quantum of Solace.
In this new trailer, we see that Bond (Daniel Craig) is still quite raw after the death of Vesper Lynd. In fact, the movie (according to co-producer Michael Wilson) picks up “literally an hour” after where Casino Royale left off.
Quantum - also starring Judi Dench, Gemma Arterton, Mathieu Amalric and Olga Kurylenko - is scheduled to open on November 7th.

Casino Royale Review: Craig Can’t Miss

Casino Royale, based on the first Bond novel by Ian Fleming, follows 007 in his very first mission – tracking down Le Chiffre, a notorious banker for terrorist organizations. After halting Le Chiffre’s devious stock market swindle, James must enter a high-stakes poker tournament to prevent him from regaining his money. With the help of the beautiful, yet mysterious Vesper Lynd, a government accountant overseeing the tournament buy-in money, James must win the game and bring in Le Chiffre, dodging obstacles from all sides along the way. The 2 1/2 hour film is visually stunning and action-packed, without a moment of banality or sluggishness (this might seem typical of a Bond film, but truly stands out here). Oh, and by the way, the new guy rules. Bond is back. His name is Daniel Craig.
Casino also stars Eva Green, Judi Dench, and Mads Mikkelsen and is directed by Martin Campbell.
