First Look: Christina Aguilera and Cher in Burlesque


If a young had chosen to work in burlesque clubs rather than the Mickey Mouse Club, the result might have looked a little something like this.

In the Showgirls-esque film , the “Not Myself Tonight” singer brings her small-town dreams to Los Angeles. There, she lands a job as a cocktail waitress, a mentor named Tess (Cher) and a jealous rival named Nikki (Kristen Bell).

The Sony production - also starring , Cam Gigandet and Stanley Tucci - hits the stage November 24, 2010.

Footloose Loses Chace Crawford, Gains a Director

Craig BrewerAlthough it feels like we’ve been talking about the planned remake for forever, the production has had trouble getting off the ground. This week, Paramount’s update even took one step forward and another step back.

Five months after director Kenny Ortega walked away from the project, a new director has been tapped. Craig Brewer, the writer/director behind Hustle & Flow, will now be in charge of bringing the story back to life. The movie, which will remain close in plot and tone to the 1984 original, will also be rewritten by Brewer. (Ortega reportedly wanted the film to be more of a musical than a drama.)

Footloose Looking for New Director

Kenny OrtegaThe remake has temporarily been grounded.

Although Paramount’s had already lined up a new Ren McCormick () and Ariel Moore (Julianne Hough) for its planned update, the studio is now without a director.

Up until last week, Kenny Ortega (High School Musical, This Is It) was the man helming the project. Unfortunately, creative and budget differences lead to his exit. According to reports, Ortega wanted $30 million for a musical extravaganza while Paramount was looking at $25 million for something a bit edgier.

A statement from Ortega’s reps, though, claims his recent project was to blame for his departure. “Coming off the extraordinary project, , director Kenny Ortega has decided it is premature for him to commit to his next film and will not be moving forward with Footloose as previously reported.”

It’s believed Paramount will still try to keep to its March production start date.

Kristen Bell: Who knew Veronica Mars was a dancer? Kristen Bell has just been added to the cast of Burlesque, a film that will see Christina Aguilera playing a small-town girl working at a cabaret-esque club in Los Angeles. The film, which stars Cher as the establishment’s owner, will feature Bell as the soon-to-be former lead dancer. Dancing with the Stars’ Julianne Hough will also do what she does best.

Julianne Hough About to Go Footloose

Julianne Hough‘s tackled both the dancing world and country music, now she’s moving on to the next phase: acting.

Provided she has room in her busy schedule, Julianne will be the Chace Crawford’s leading lady in the remake of . Dancing with the Stars’ two-time winner will be taking on the Ariel Moore role originated by Lori Singer.

Hough’s selection came after several other young stars - including Hayden Panettiere and Miley Cyrus - were rumored for the part. Although this wouldn’t be the 20-year-old’s first appearance on the big screen, this would be her first major role.

Director Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) told E! Online that he has much love for Julianne. “I adore her. I’m a big fan of hers. Not only how beautiful but how deep her talent goes.”

Production is set to begin in March.
