Revolutionary Road Another Hit for DiCaprio and Winslet?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Paramount, Adaptation, Drama, Romance, New Releases, Theatrical Reviews,
Eleven years ago, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet made film history in Titanic - truly, an on-screen pairing even more epic than Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. With Revolutionary Road, the two are reunited.
But despite this star power, many critics aren’t raving about Revolutionary Road. MSNBC called the flick “another sinking ship,” to poke a little fun at the Titanic history of this on-screen couple. The same review goes on to call the movie a “dreary film adaptation” and says both main characters are “thoroughly mediocre, uninteresting people.”
The Associated Press calls the film “brutally tedious,” hardly high praise. Many reviewers are comparing the subject matter of the film to a watered-down version of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and the look of the piece to TV series Mad Men.
Somewhere in the middle of it all are DiCaprio and Winslet, whom - everyone seems to agree - both delivered great performances. If nothing else, the film is worthwhile for these two alone. And not all the reviews are negative - Variety calls the flick “constantly engrossing.”
That’s hopeful, right?

Although last January’s Screen Actors Guild Awards were spared from the writers’ dispute, SAG is facing its own strike this year. Regardless, the awards season must go on. Next month’s event - scheduled to air on Sunday, January 25th on both TNT and TBS - will come just three days after the Oscar nominations are announced.
Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from this year’s list of film nominees:
- Doubt led this year’s crop with three nominations. Milk and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button came in second with two nods each.

Although a looming SAG strike may threaten next year’s Academy Awards, the Golden Globes ceremony should finally go on as planned. The 66th annual event is scheduled to air on Sunday, January 11th, just 11 days before the Oscar nominations are announced.
Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from this year’s list of film nominees:

- Despite being chosen Best Film by the New York Film Critics, Sean Penn was the only nod Milk received by the HFPA.
- Meryl Streep earned two nominations for her work in Doubt and Mamma Mia.
- Kate Winslet is also up for two awards. Her films - Revolutionary Road and The Reader - are also up for Best Picture.
- Heath Ledger did get a posthumous nomination as expected.
- Although he was recently recognized for his acting work in Gran Torino, director Clint Eastwood (Changeling) was only acknowledged for his musical achievements.

Kate Winslet Talks About Reuniting with DiCaprio
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: DreamWorks, Adaptation, Drama, Celebrity Gossip, Upcoming Releases,
Eleven years after starring in the #1 movie of all time (I’m still crossing my fingers for The Dark Knight), Titanic‘s Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are reuniting for a new movie together.
In Revolutionary Road, the former star-crossed lovers play a seemingly happy couple struggling to conform in the 1950’s.
And while it’s not surprising to hear that the chemistry between Winslet and DiCaprio remains strong, it’s interesting to hear that the intimacy was quite awkward the second time around. For those who don’t know, the Richard Yates adaptation was directed by Sam Mendes, Kate Winslet’s husband.

Role Refill: Kate Winslet Subs for Kidman
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Weinstein Company, Adaptation, Period, Romance, Casting, Upcoming Releases,
Although an unexpected pregnancy is usually a producer’s worst nightmare, Nicole Kidman’s recent announcement couldn’t have come at a better time. Her decision to drop out of The Reader, an adaptation of a 1995 novel, allowed the filmmakers to cast their original choice: Kate Winslet.
Winslet, who had expressed interest in Reader a while back, couldn’t commit due to a scheduling conflict. (She was busy filming Revolutionary Road with her Titanic co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio, and director-husband, Sam Mendes.) That was when Nicole Kidman stepped in. Months down the road, their roles have reversed. With her work on Road now complete, Kate is free to star opposite Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient) as an older woman who has an affair with a teen in Post-WWII Germany.
Given Kidman’s role in 2004’s unsettling Birth, this whole thing may have worked out for the best. One movie about a relationship with a much younger man is really enough.
