First Look: The Red Band Trailer for MacGruber
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Universal, Adaptation, Comedy, Trailers, Upcoming Releases, Videos,
Films based on Saturday Night Live sketches are usually as uneven as the broadcasts themselves. Moments of hilarity are typically overshadowed by 60 other minutes of stupidity. So should we expect anything different from this venture?
In MacGruber, Will Forte’s title character is assisted by SNL costar Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillipe in his mission to locate a Russian nuclear warhead and enemy Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer).
Like your movies sprinkled with date rape, upper decker and butthole jokes? Then this will be the perfect escape for you.
MacGruber opens April 23.

What would happen if you lined up NBC’s funniest Thursday night stars and pretended they were married? The evening would end in disaster.
In Date Night, The Office‘s Steve Carell and 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey play a couple trying to enjoy some time alone. When Carell’s character pulls a Michael Scott to get them a restaurant table, their night takes a not-so-routine turn.

Getting Into Character: Forte and Wiig in MacGruber
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Universal, Adaptation, Comedy, Upcoming Releases,
Can MacGruber find a way to survive when he’s given more than 10 seconds to try?
In the big screen version of the popular Saturday Night Live sketch (you can see some clips after the jump), Will Forte and Kristen Wiig reprise the characters who are always moments away from death. The movie, which is currently filming in New Mexico, is separate from a MacGyver adaptation that New Line is reportedly putting together.
Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer are also on board the Lorne Michaels-produced version. MacGruber is scheduled for a April 16, 2010 release.

The Orphanage: One of the most haunting movies I’ve seen in the past few years is being given an English-language redo. The Orphanage, the 2007 Spanish film from director Juan Antonio Bayona, will now be in the hands of Larry Fessenden. Guillermo del Toro, the producer on the original project, will serve the same role on this version. Guillermo also assisted Larry with the new script.

Could 2009 be the year Drew Barrymore is finally taken seriously?
Although the actress has starred in a number of successful projects, the 34-year-old made people take notice earlier this year with her portrayal of Little Edie in Grey Gardens. (She just received a Lead Actress nomination for that performance today.) Now she’s months away from directorial debut.

Casting Corner: James McAvoy, Ben Affleck, Nicolas Cage
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Miramax, Adaptation, Animation, Drama, Comedy, Casting, Celeb News, Upcoming Releases,
Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:
It seems as if there isn’t a woman James McAvoy can’t romance. In the past few years, he’s been paired with Gillian Anderson, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathway and, of course, Angelina Jolie. Now the rising actor will be taking on his biggest chemistry challenge yet.
In Gnomeo and Juliet, McAvoy and Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) will voice characters in a CGI-animated version of the Shakespeare drama. But those looking for any Montagues or Capulets will be pleasantly surprised. In this version, the lovers will actually come from rivaling families of garden gnomes.
This film, co-produced by Elton John, will also feature music from the Lion King musician. The feature should be completed by 2010.
