J.J. Abrams Wants to Work with Nimoy Again

Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime is likely to return for the next Star Trek movie. Although the veteran actor recently said he didn’t think he’d be invited back, director J.J. Abrams is having a hard time envisioning the sequel without him.

“I can’t imagine a movie not needing Leonard. I’m sure that what he’s saying is a combination of modesty and honesty. He may actually feel that way. But, the truth is, we could never have made this movie without him, and working with him again would be a joy,” the filmmaker said. “It is clearly too early, given that we are just now talking story, to conclude whether or not Spock Prime is in the film or not. Do I want to work with him again? Of course, 100%. I’d love to.”

The director also admits he is open to the possibility of bringing back characters from the original sci-fi series, but doesn’t want to run the risk of alienating new fans. “In going forward, the fun of this movie series is that we will have the opportunity, given its alternate timeline, to cross paths with any of the experiences, places and characters that existed in the original series, but we have to be really careful, doing that,” he added to Collder.com.

Abrams added: “I don’t want to do something that is so inside that only die-hard fans will appreciate. We’re just now working on the script and just beginning the process of story breaking, but I guarantee you, whatever the story is and whatever the final movie ends up being, I know it will be something that will work on its own terms and be something that you don’t need to know and study Star Trek to get, but if you are a fan, there will hopefully be gift after gift of connections, references and characters that you hold near and dear. At least, that’s the intent.”

Star Trek Writers Detail Rejected William Shatner Scene

Interested in knowing how William Shatner might have been incorporated into Star Trek? Well - if you haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t read any further. The details involve an alternate ending for the film.

In an interview with MTV, the prequel’s two writers - Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman - explain that the ultimate decision to leave out Shatner was a difficult one. In fact, the two even disagree on whether the idea could have worked.

“We did write a Shatner scene,” Orci revealed. “But we didn’t want it to be a gimmick. We didn’t want it to be….to really bring him back in the right way would have required an entire movie to devote itself to that plot similarly to The Search for Spock (Number 3).” He added, “But we did write a scene and I think ultimately we all decided internally that it….We were split. But I think the decision was that it wasn’t quite enough to justify wasting [Shatner’s] time.”

Leonard Nimoy: Back on Trek?

Nearly two decades have passed since , the most famous half-Vulcan in Hollywood, has portrayed his iconic role. Fans have to wait only two more weeks to see Nimoy reprise the role of Spock.

Nimoy returns to the role in the new movie, the eleventh in the franchise and the first to feature a very young Captain Kirk and crew. He will play opposite Zachary Quinto, who plays the younger version of Mr. Spock (whose first name can’t be pronounced).

This will also mark the very first time Leonard Nimoy has played Spock without co-star at his side. Shatner’s Kirk will not be making an appearance in the new Star Trek flick. Paramount, expecting big success for the movie,  has already ordered up a sequel (which will bring the number of Trek movies up to an even dozen).

Nimoy says it’s “too earily to speculate” whether he’ll appear in that sequel, and whether or not he’ll appear in that sequel with William Shatner. Still, he says, “I don’t say ‘never’ anymore.”

“I think a movie that shows people of various races working together and surviving hundreds of years from now is not a bad message to put out right now,” were the words of J. J. Abrams, director/producer of the upcoming flick. “It was important to me that optimism be cool again,” he said in a recent interview.

This “We Are the Universe” sort of mentality might sound mushy, but let’s give the guy some slack. He does, after all, have a movie to promote. Everything’s gotta have an angle, and this one is a sight better than the that’s been filling the press.

Star Trek Movie Delayed Until Next Year

Star Trek LogoWell, it looks like we’re going to have to wait a little longer to beam anyone up.

Those who made it out to see Cloverfield in the past few weeks got a sneak peek at another J.J. Abrams production: .  (If you haven’t seen the clip yet, you can view it after the jump.)  Unfortunately, a major part of that trailer is now no longer true.

The highly-anticipated prequel/sequel was slated to be released ‘Christmas 2008’.  What it should have said was ‘December….Give Or Take a Few Months.’

According to Variety, the movie’s premiere will remain ‘under construction’ until May 8, 2009.

The film was simply part of a major reshuffling in ‘s calendar.  In most cases, a changed date usually signals bad news; that’s not the case with Trek.  In fact, the studio believes the movie will benefit from this shift.

Actors involved in the next installment include Tyler Perry, , Zoe Saldana, Eric Bana, and Leonard Nimoy.

Tyler Perry Joins ‘Star Trek’ Film

Put Description Here - the man behind and - will be assuming a much smaller role for his next project.

The writer/producer/actor will be taking someone else’s direction while starring in the upcoming film.  (I believe this may be the first time he’s ever participated in something that didn’t have his name in the title.)  Perry will join a continuously expanding cast that already includes Eric Bana, Winona Ryder, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, John Cho and Leonard Nimoy. 

If the movie adds one more star, I believe it will have officially reached proportions.

William Shatner Slighted By New ‘Star Trek’ Movie

William ShatnerIn what can only be described as a dismal shame, William Shatner is being left out of the loop on the upcoming motion picture. Shatner’s fellow cast mate, , was attached to the project early and is set to reprise his role as Mr. Spock. Shatner expressed surprise to the Associated Press last week that he’s not in the movie at all. For shame. You can’t have without Captain Kirk, people.

The new Trek harkens back to the well-loved original series and features as a young Kirk and as young Spock. Nevermind the fact that Kirk died in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations. Shatner is an icon of the genre – if nothing else, he could appear as a holographic image.

Shaun of the Dead’s Simon Pegg Joins ‘Star Trek’ Film

Simon PeggJust last week we announced intriguing casting news for the upcoming film:  Eric Bana as the film’s villian, Nero.  (I wonder if this was the part Russell Crowe was rumored for.)  Now we have more news to whet your appetites.  Actor (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) is signed on to play Scotty; (Harold and Kumar) will take over the role of Sulu.  With the exception of James T. Kirk (an actor is supposedly being finalized), most of the characters have now been filled.  As a refresher:

  • John Cho: Sulu
  • Simon Pegg: Scotty
  • Eric Bana: Nero
  • Zoe Saldana (Haven): Uhura
  • Anton Yelchin (Alpha Dog): Chekov
  • Zachary Quinto (): young Spock
  • Leonard Nimoy: Spock


Not much is known about the script, though it is believed the movie will depict the Enterprise’s early days.  Shooting for the film will begin in November.
