Sam Worthington Not Right for Bond

Sam Worthington has scored roles in Avatar and Terminator Salvation, but there was one major part he just couldn’t nab.
The 33-year-old actor admits he once aimed to become the next James Bond, but he couldn’t work out how to play the suave spy.
“I held off and held off doing the audition because I couldn’t find a way into the character. And when I finally did I went for it,” Worthington recalled. “I got a half a day of acting with Casino Royale director Martin Campbell. I got to do some scenes with some great actors, gave it my all, and it wasn’t right for me.”
However, the experience led Sam to believe in his abilities. That confidence helped him land the role of Jake Scully.
“I was backing myself. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain,” he told ShortList magazine. “I thought the least I’ll get out of this is to act a few scenes with James Cameron, and that’s a hell of an opportunity. I learned that from going for the James Bond audition. If I give it all I’ve got and still don’t get the part, then so be it. This time I did.”
Sam’s next movie - Clash of the Titans - opens in theaters this Friday.

Box Office Breakdown: Shutter Island the Weekend’s Top Destination

Avatar may have finally bested Titanic, but Leonardo DiCaprio still has reason to smile.
Shutter Island, Leo’s latest collaboration with Martin Scorsese, earned $41 million over the past three days—more than twice what it’s nearest competitor pulled in. The gross was not only the actor’s personal best (2002’s Catch Me If You Can earned $30.1 million) but Scorsese’s as well. (The Academy Award winner rang in $26.9 million with 2006’s The Departed.)
Another Oscar-winning helmer, Roman Polanski, also had a bit of success at the box office this weekend. The director, who has been at the center of legal drama recently, saw his film The Ghost Writer rake in $183,009 while in limited release. That amount equates to a $45,000 per screen average.

Box Office Breakdown: Valentine’s Day Has Rosy Four-Day Weekend

Despite receiving less than enthusiastic reviews, Valentine’s Day remained the point of attraction for many romance-minded ticket buyers this weekend. Garry Marshall’s romantic comedy wooed audiences over the holiday period while simultaneously breaking records in the process.
Warner Bros.’ ensemble cast combined their efforts to pull in $63.1 million over the past four days ($56.2 million for just the first three). The feature became the highest-grossing film during any President’s or Valentine’s Day frame while also topping the studio’s list of four-day debuts.

After an exhausting seven weeks at #1, Avatar found itself in entirely new territory: sitting back at #2. Although the film had broken nearly every record in the history books (and padded another $22.9 million to its domestic total), the 20th Century Fox feature ended its win streak nine weeks shy of E.T.‘s mark.
Taking the lead from James Cameron was the latest weeper from author Nicholas Sparks. Dear John - starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried - was the counterprogramming winner during Super Bowl weekend. The romantic drama earned an impressive $30.5 million and came narrowly close to besting the record set during the same sports frame in 2008. (That was when Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour generated $31.1 million.)

Box Office Breakdown: Avatar Has the Edge Over Mel Gibson

Despite success in recent years as a director, Mel Gibson hasn’t been seen in front of the cameras in quite some time. Unfortunately, he couldn’t have picked a worse weekend to make a return.
Gibson’s new film, Edge of Darkness, debuted to a respectable $17.2 million over the past three days. While that may - may - have been enough for a first place finish at any other time, the Warner Bros. feature brought in approximately half as much as that other film.
Avatar, with its $31.3 million take, is now approximately $10 million shy of officially taking the domestic crown from Titanic. (The 20th Century Fox film finally become the worldwide leader during the past week.) If the sci-fi extravaganza remains at #1 for
nine more weeks,it’ll officially tie E.T. for that record.)

Blake Lively Competing for Green Lantern Role

Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively is hoping to star in the comic book adaptation of Green Lantern.
The 22-year-old is vying to play the love interest of character Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds). However, Blake reportedly faces stiff competition for the part as Jennifer Garner, Diane Kruger and Eva Green are also in the running.
“Blake would be amazing in this role. She has a busy 2010 promoting The Town, but she would love to play a part in a superhero film,” a source said.
Martin Campbell, who previously worked on Casino Royale, is to direct the movie, leading some to speculate that former Bond girl Green may be his choice for the role.
Green Lantern tells the story of an ordinary man chosen by an alien to receive an energy ring that can be used to protect the planet. Filming is due to begin in 2010, in time for a June 17, 2011 release date.

“I’m the guy with nothing to lose.” When a man already facing a pricey divorce battle tells you that, you better watch out.
In Edge of Darkness, Mel Gibson plays a Boston detective who tries to uncover the conspiracy behind his daughter’s murder. The film, which was directed by Casino Royale‘s Martin Campbell, is Gibson’s first major role since 2002’s Signs.
The Warner Bros. thriller will open on January 29, 2010.

Ghost Rider‘s Nicolas Cage may soon getting off the bike and heading behind bars. The actor, last seen in National Treasure, is currently in negotiations to play an inmate serving a life sentence in Scared Straight.
The movie, based on the program that tries to ‘scare’ temporary inmates into leading a clean life, will focus on an incarcerated teen held hostage during a prison riot. Cage, unable to sit back and watch this unfold, will reluctantly come to the kid’s rescue.
Scared - which will be directed by John Carpenter (Halloween) - should begin filming this October.
