2011 Academy Award Nominations

Academy Award winner Mo'Nique (Precious) and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' President Tom Sherak had the honor of announcing the nominees for the 2011 Annual Academy Awards early Tuesday morning.
The King's Speech lead all films this morning with 12 nominations total. True Grit came in second with 10 nods. Meanwhile, The Social Network and Inception both tied with 8 nominations.
Here are some of the noteworthy omissions and inclusions from today’s press conference:
- Best Director: No Christopher Nolan (Inception). Seriously?? (Even James Cameron has to say something about that!)
- Best Movie: No for Blue Valentine, yes for Winter's Bone and Toy Story 3 (also nominated in Animation category)
- Best Actor: No Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine)!!! Also, no Mark Wahlberg (Fighter), no Leo DiCaprio (Inception), no Aaron Eckhart (Rabbit Hole), no Paul Giamatti (recent Golden Globe winner for Barney's Version). Javier Bardem, though, gets a yes for Biutiful.
- Best Actress: No Julianne Moore (The Kids are All Right), no Halle Berry (Frankie & Alice)
- Best Supp. Actor: No Andrew Garfield or Justin Timberlake (The Social Network), but a big YES for Jeremy Renner (The Town) and John Hawkes (Winter's Bone)

Mel Gibson Film Sparks Protests in Mexico

Mel Gibson‘s new film has sparked protests in Mexico.
The 54-year-old actor has caused controversy over scenes being shot at the Ignacio Allende prison in the eastern state of Veracruz. The project - believed to be How I Spent My Summer Vacation - forced 214 inmates to be sent to at least four other detention centers in the country to accommodate the set.
The prisoners were escorted from the jail - which usually houses 1,000 convicts - by police and soldiers between midnight on Friday until roughly 3:00 am on Saturday morning last weekend. Those transported during the operation have been held on murder, robbery, drug trafficking, kidnapping and other serious charges.

Star Trek Premiere Latest Victim of Swine Flu

Now that residents of Mexico are sticking as close to home as possible, movie studios are having to readjust their international calendars.
Earlier this week, 20th Century Fox chose to indefinitely postpone the premiere of Wolverine. Now Paramount is following suit with the debut of Star Trek. That sci-fi prequel had been scheduled to open on May 8.
Unless the swine flu situation plateaus soon, other blockbusters could be added to the casualty list. Sony is currently monitoring events for the May 15 release of Angels & Demons. Meanwhile, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian - another Fox release - could also be pushed from its May 22 slot.

Wolverine Premiere on Hold Due to Swine Flu

He might be able to ride a helicopter, but not even Wolverine can bring down the swine flu.
Due to the current epidemic in Mexico, 20th Century Fox has chosen to postpone its plans. Hugh Jackman had been scheduled to attend the premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine in Mexico City this Wednesday.
“We were not only concerned about Hugh’s welfare – and we would never send anyone into harm’s way – but we also have an enormous office filled with people we care about,” a rep told People magazine.
Although health officials are still trying to get a handle on the situation, the studio is leaving open the possibility of a future screening. “Hugh is obviously beloved [there] so we’ll see what happens. We’ll monitor the situation,” the rep added.
