Movie Remakes: Killer Tomatoes, Rosemary’s Baby

Although I have a hard time believing there are people out there born after the ‘70s, I understand there are many who’ve never even heard of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Fortunately for them, there will soon be a remake.
Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine - the creators behind the “Ask A Ninja” web shorts - have taken on the challenge of retooling the cult classic. Although the update’s budget will undoubtedly be larger than the original’s (the first film reportedly cost less than $100,000), it’s unclear how far the writers will deviate from the 1978 storyline.
The movie about murderous fruit spawned three sequels including Return of the Killer Tomatoes and Killer Tomatoes Strike Back. (George Clooney’s career managed to survive an appearance in the former.) No target date for the redo has been announced.

Sequel News: ‘Cloverfield’, ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’

Cloverfield - a movie that’s only two weeks old - has already earned itself sequel buzz. While that shouldn’t be surprising news given the film’s stellar debut numbers, the movie did drop 68% in its second week. And let’s not forget the movie’s ending. Wouldn’t the movie be better served as a stand-alone piece....or do people really need further explanation?
Well, regardless of what I might think, the negotiations have already begun. Its Paramount’s hope that the three behind the first installment - director Matt Reeves, producer J.J. Abrams and writer Drew Goddard - will return to create them a monster-sized hit. Who knows? I actually found myself enjoying 28 Weeks Later, and I was convinced that would be a disaster.

This week marks the release of the first batch of high-definition DVDs since on-the-fence Warner landed decidedly on the Blu side; I must admit, as an HD DVD man, the day feels a bit colder than normal. But no matter—the format war is far from over.
On a lighter note, both formats have some exciting titles to speak of, including the Blu-ray release of one of my favorite movies from 2007, Sunshine; Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning film, The Pianist, on HD DVD; and the long-awaited special edition of David Fincher’s Zodiac, also on HD DVD. The DVD release from July contained nary a special feature, so this two-disc director’s cut ought to please those Fincher fans waiting for a decent version.

Watts And Campbell For ‘The Birds’

With Halloween only a week and a half away, it seems only fitting that we hear more news about the remake of The Birds. First brought to the big screen in 1963 by “The Master of Suspense“ Alfred Hitchcock, Universal has been planning a re-imagining of the terrifying classic for some time now.
The absolutely gorgeous Naomi Watts (King Kong, The Ring) will star while Casino Royale director Martin Campbell is in talks to helm the film. Variety reports that Universal is not rushing the film due to the looming possibility of a Hollywood strike. Michael Bay is among the several names reported to be producing the film via Platinum Dunes and Mandalay Pictures.
Watts, who can soon be seen in Warner Independent’s Funny Games, is filming The International and will also appear in the overly titled Kicked, Bitten and Scratched: Life and Lessons at the World’s Premiere School for Exotic Animal Trainers.

As the autumn season pulls the coats from our closets, warms our chocolate beverages, and turns our leaves from a verdant green to a rusty orange, the movie studios give us another reason to spend a comfy evening at home: summer blockbusters on DVD. And what better way to view these visual—if not always plausible—delights than in high definition?
The coveted two-disc special edition of Transformers releases this week on HD DVD, much to the chagrin of Blu-ray loyalists; without a major exclusive release, they’ll simply have to make do with some mediocre thrillers.
But aside from the inferior cinematic fare, the first and second volumes of Showtime’s Masters of Horror series is out just in time for Halloween. The anthology show gives modern horror directors a full hour to play without the restrictions of an MPAA rating or television censorship. Although it failed to garner much critical acclaim, the show ended up being quite successful and achieved what some could perceive to be cult status.

Michael Bay set to remake Friday the 13th

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it now: I don’t care for remakes. If it’s a new movie, shouldn’t it be a new script? At the very least, an original idea? In the wake of the success of Zombie’s Halloween remake (an idea I rejected outright as soon as I heard about it), Transformers director Michael Bay is going to re-do Friday the 13th. People…why mess with perfection? Friday the 13th has become an iconic horror movie, spawning a bevy of sequels and a whole new meaning for hockey masks. The re-make will bastardize the original movie, which featured not Jason but his mother as the scary killer. In this new version, Jason will both wear the mask (which didn’t appear in the original Friday the 13th flick) and do the dirty deeds himself. The setting of Crystal Lake, at least, will not be changed. The last Friday flick combined Jason with another horrific big screen villain, Freddy Krueger, in 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason. Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who wrote the F v. J script, will pen the new version of Friday the 13th. BAH!

Target Date For ‘Transformers’ Sequel

I believe this is what you call putting the cart before the horse..
Although no director, producer or star have yet been confirmed for the project, a target date has already been set for a Transformers sequel. While Michael Bay and Shia LeBeouf are expected to return, Steven Spielberg’s participation is currently up in the air. An ongoing dispute between Spielberg’s Dreamworks and its parent company, Paramount, could unfortunately put a wrench in everyone’s plans. But it’s hoped production can at least begin before a possible Actors Guild strike next year.
If all things go as planned, expect to see the film on June 26th...2009.
