It’s All in the Family: Hollywood Nepotism
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Casting, Celebrity Gossip, Filmmaking,
In most places of business, nepotism is frowned upon. In Hollywood, it’s part of standard casting policies. Why is it okay for La La Land to offer opportunities to unknown - but well-connected - actors, when hiring regulations are in place for every other industry in the country? Let’s dip our toes into the Tinseltown gene pool and see how many family trees we can count.
If you haven’t heard by now, Will Smith’s son is going to become the next A-list, must-have child star. He’s starring in the new Karate Kid reboot (a movie that’s unnecessary at best), and now he’s putting his rapping abilities on display in a movie soundtrack tie-in. Like it’s not already great being Will Smith’s kid, Jaden, 11, is now forging a strong career in the “family business.” Which just happens to be multi-million-dollar movie and recording contracts. Nice.
Is Jaden Smith the most talented kid for the movie role? Are his rap skills so superior that he deserves the outpouring of press he’s been getting for his involvement with the film’s theme song?
Frankly, it doesn’t f&*^ing matter. The Karate Kid reboot (which, we hate to break it to you, does
notfeature karate) is produced by Will Smith and from its inception was intended as a Jaden Smith vehicle. No one else ever auditioned for the role of the Karate Kid, not that anyone else had a snowball’s shot in hell of landing it anyway.
Hollywood has always been the land where dreams come true…if you’ve already got an “in.”

“I’ve been searching all over the world for you.” - Nicolas Cage explaining to Jay Baruchel why he hasn’t had time for a haircut.
For The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Cage reteamed with his National Treasure crew (director Jon Turteltaub/producer Jerry Bruckheimer) to do a wildly different take on the classic tale. In this new Disney production, bucket-carrying broomsticks have been replaced by large birds while Mickey Mouse has been traded in for Baruchel.

X-Men: Although it’s been six years since X2, Bryan Singer says he may not be done with the comic book franchise. The director recently revealed that he’s entertaining the thought of another installment. “I’m still looking to possibly returning to the X-Men franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it,” Singer said. “I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast,” he admitted. Brett Ratner was at the helm for 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand while Gavin Hood directed 2009’s Wolverine.

Nicolas Cage Sells Home to Renovate Castle
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celeb News, Celebrity Gossip, Rumors,
Nicolas Cage has sold one of his homes to help renovate his castle.
The Kick-Ass actor received a reported $6.6 million for the six-bedroom property in Bath, South West England, after deciding to put it on the market because he didn’t spend enough time there.
He is now putting all the money into nearby Midford Castle, which he bought in 2007 for around $8.2 million. The castle has been empty for two years, and Cage is focused on completely renovating the historic property—built in 1775—as he wants to make it his main UK home. The 45-year-old star has submitted planning permission to Bath and North Somerset Council, saying that the castle was in a poor condition and in need of repair to return it to its former “grandeur.”
Earlier this year, the National Treasure actor put the rest of his property empire—including homes in the Bahamas, California, Nevada and Rhode Island—on the market.
In May, Cage—who is married to former waitress Alice Kim, with whom he has a three-year-old son Kal-El—sold his 11th century German castle after only spending one night there, despite spending millions and three years renovating it.

Note to self: Stop questioning Nicolas Cage’s career choices. Stop questioning Nicolas Cage’s career choices…
Production on The Green Hornet has barely begun, yet the number of obstacles keeps growing. First, the studio had to find a new director and a new Kato. Then Disney announced it would release Tron Legacy on the same December 2010 date. Over the weekend, there was a stunt mishap during filming. Now another hole has emerged in the casting lineup.

Harrison Ford tops Highest Paid Actor List
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Paramount, Box Office, Celeb News, Lists,
Harrison Ford is Hollywood’s highest paid actor after earning $60.37 million over the last 12 months. The 66-year-old star made the staggering sum after starring in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - which took $701 million worldwide at the box office. Ford - who had only appeared in four movies since 2000 before agreeing to reprise the famous role for a fourth time - was paid the figure between June 2008 and June 2009 as part of a deal that saw studio Paramount give the veteran star, director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas a percentage of the film’s earnings.
Other stars to make the list, compiled by business bible Forbes magazine, include Adam Sandler, who came second after raking in $51.38 million, Will Smith, who finished third with $42 million, and fourth placed Eddie Murphy, who earned $37.3 million. Rounding off the top five was Nicolas Cage, who was paid $37 million in the last 12 months. Forbes compiled the list of top earning stars by speaking to agents, managers, producers and lawyers to find out what money stars received upfront for movies in development and earnings from released films. Advertising and other earnings from the last 12 months were also taken into consideration.

Box Office Breakdown: 17 is the Lucky Number
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Disney, Lionsgate, Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Animation, Drama, Horror, Music, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists,
Zac Efron may be cute, but he’s no Hannah Montana.
This weekend the Disney veteran got a chance to prove his worth in his first starring role. And though he managed to hit #1, Efron pulled in approximately $8.6 million less than Miley Cyrus did last week. The premiere of 17 Again also opened to $18.3 million less than High School Musical 3 did last October. (Then again, those two family-friendly films were a bit more accessible with their G-ratings.)
Russell Crowe, in the meantime, had far much more to groan about. The Oscar winner found his new movie, State of Play, sandwiched in between the two tween idols. The thriller, costarring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams, earned nearly $10 million less than the age-reversal comedy for a second place finish.
