Memorable Moments from the Unmemorable Academy Awards

Last night’s Best Actor categories were as predictable as the Best Actress races were surprising. Yesterday’s ceremony was also as disappointing as it was routine.
For months now, we’d been hearing about several plans being orchestrated for the Academy Awards. If the writers’ strike was still in effect, the producers swore the telecast would continue with packages that celebrated Oscar’s 80-year history. Interestingly enough, even with the scribes back at work, the show was still horribly written and crammed with unnecessary fillers. (Even I could have penned ‘the always Fantastic…Jessica Alba’.)
As it was, the winners appeared to have been given less time last night to accept their awards than ever. (Which may or may not have been a good thing.) But did Javier Bardem really need to rush his lovely speech to his mother? Did the organizers have to reshow the previous awards presentations? Did the AMPAS President really need to waste time explaining how the selection process is done??

Reitman Says No to Juno Sequel

Academy Award-nominated director Jason Reitman has just given us the best and worst news possible. He loves his recent film, Juno, so much, he refuses to participate in any sequel. (Of course, that doesn’t mean one couldn’t be made without him.)
What? You didn’t know there was going to be a sequel? Well, if common sense rules - there won’t be. But apparently the movie’s $100+ million gross, Oscar noms and critical acclaim have earned the film just that type of buzz.
While some might consider that kind of talk disrespectful (Why would they dare ruin a perfect experience?), I think we should just consider the rumors to be a form of flattery (They only make sequels for good things, right?) and not entertain them any further.
Seriously. We all need to let Juno go.

Catch Up On Your (Classic) Oscar Films

If the February sweeps period hasn’t offered you enough to watch on TV, here is a surefire way to fill up your DVR. For the next few weeks, Turner Classic Movies will be honoring Oscar-nominated films.
The cable channel will devote one day of each week to a different era (e.g. Tuesdays/1940’s, Fridays/1970’s). This, of course, all leads up to the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, February 24th.
Although we are already one week into February, TCM still has many films left to cover. (Approximately 4-6 movies will be show on any given day.) Here is a list of some of those upcoming selections:
- MONDAYS (1920’s and 30’s): It Happened One Night, Mr. Deeds Comes to Town
- TUESDAYS (1940’s): The Red Shoes, Yankee Doodle Dandy
- WEDNESDAYS (1950’s): Vertigo, Roman Holiday
- THURSDAYS (1960’s): 2001: A Space Odyssey, Easy Rider

Oscar Nominees Talk Strike

The Academy Award nominations have been announced, AMPAS is determined the show will go on in February, and everything seems to be moving toward the big night (the Oscar ceremony). But…is it, really? The Writers Guild is in talks with the producers, and all parties seem to be hopeful this whole strike might end. According to some nominees, that’s the only way they’ll even attend the event.
Tony Gilroy, nominated in the Best Director category, told the Associated Press he “would never cross a picket line ever.” Viggo Mortensen, who received the Best Actor nod, likewise said that if the strike continues he’ll not be on the red carpet. Others, like producer Scott Rudin, said they doubt there will even be an Oscars event if the strike isn’t solved beforehand.
The Academy, however, is sticking to its guns; President Sid Ganis said they will put on the show. That settles that.

2008 Academy Award Nominations

The nominations for the 80th Annual Academy Awards were announced bright and early Tuesday morning from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Assuming the ceremony goes on as scheduled, you can see the live broadcast Sunday, February 24th on ABC.
Notable additions/omissions from today’s announcement:
- Based on the major categories alone, it looks like Michael Clayton may be the frontrunner. It received six nominations.
- Aside from one nod each in the Best Supporting Actor category, both Into the Wild and Charlie Wilson’s War were virtually shut out from the top prizes.
- Sweeney Todd - winner for Best Comedy/Musical at the Golden Globes - was shut out for Best Picture. Johnny Depp’s nom was the only major accolade for the film.
- A much-deserving Amy Adams did not receive a nom nor did her film, Enchanted.
- Atonement - the movie with the most nominations at the Globes - only received 3 in the major areas. The two main stars (Knightley, McAvoy) were also shut out.
- Cate Blanchett earned two nominations this year (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I’m Not There).
- Angelina Jolie was not recognized for her heartbreaking performance in A Mighty Heart.

2008 Razzie Award Nominations

The Razzies, which is sort of a tongue-in-cheek antithesis of the Oscars, recently released their nominations for the worst of the worst. Celebs who topped the list include recently wed - no wait, unwed - Eddie Murphy and Lindsay Lohan.
Alright. Lindsay has taken a lot of flak for her multiple roles in I Know Who Killed Me - the film which received a Razzie nom for Worst Movie in 2007 - but let me say again that I liked the film. (But then, I’m a Lohan fan.) Meanwhile, Murphy picked up several nominations (okay, eight) for his duplicity in Norbit, giving him a record-breaking number of Razzie nods for 2007. No one’s ever received that many before.
Bratz, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and Daddy Day Camp also received nominations while Jessica Alba was included in the Worst Actress category for three movies (though rumor has it Lohan will give her stiff competition for that particular award).
Winners will be announced February 23, a day before the Academy Awards.

Academy Says Oscars Won’t Change

It seemed like a fairly simple issue to resolve. It looked pretty cut-and-dry. But that was back in November, when the Writers Guild first went on strike. More than two months later, the picture is much more grim.
Now, LA businesses are out $1 billion and stand to lose another $80 million when the Golden Globes don’t go forward as planned. Now, the strike is affecting more than House, 24, and all those others. Now, it’s cutting into the award shows.
But, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences isn’t going down that easily. Scheduled for Feb. 24, a spokesperson for the Oscars said things are being planned and arranged as they traditionally have been in the past - and that the show will go on with or without writers. Meanwhile, the Guild has denied the use of film clips and past Academy Award broadcasts, and says no writers will work the event. Should this show also be canceled, LA will lose an estimated $130 million more in revenue.

‘No Country for Old Men’ Earns Big Honor

Although there’s a large slate of movies yet to be released, the National Board of Review kicked off awards season this week with its list of honorees. Joel and Ethan Coen’s film, No Country for Old Men, walked away with NBR’s prize for Best Film along with two other categories.
The NBR is not necessarily known for predicting Oscar success. Nevertheless, the group consisting of educators, historians and film industry professionals did select Forrest Whitaker and Helen Mirren as its winners last year.
Here’s a list of the 2007 NBR honorees. Even if you can’t use these selections in your Academy Awards betting pool, you now know which films you should become familiar with:
- Best Film: No Country for Old Men
- Best Director: Tim Burton, Sweeney Todd
- Best Directorial Debut: Ben Affleck, Gone Baby Gone
- Best Actor: George Clooney, Michael Clayton

Oscar Buzz for Animated Films

The official nominees for the 80th Annual Academy Awards haven’t yet been selected, but twelve animated feature films are already up for consideration. Only three films out of the twelve submitted will receive actual nominations, and only then if submission procedures are correctly followed.
No more than sixteen movies may be considered in any one category, but films submitted to the Animated category may qualify for other nominations as well. The year’s potential contenders include Bee Movie, Beowulf, Meet the Robinsons, Ratatouille, Shrek the Third and The Simpsons Movie.
The Oscar nominations will be announced Tuesday, January 22.
