To promote his as-yet-untitled project, the director chose to make the direct approach. Why simply comment on the economy when you can fundraise to help save it?

Michael Moore Financial Documentary to Premiere This Fall

We might now know what the economy will be doing four months now, but there is one thing we can count on: Michael Moore commenting on it all.
It still doesn’t have a name, but it does now have a release date. Moore’s new documentary about the global financial crisis will premiere on October 2. Those keeping a close eye on the markets might realize the significance of that date. On October 1, 2008, the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street was approved.
A statement released by Moore gives us an idea of what we should expect. “The wealthy, at some point, decided they didn’t have enough wealth. They wanted more—a lot more. So they systematically set about to fleece the American people out of their hard-earned money. Now, why would they do this? That is what I seek to discover in this movie.”

Box Office Breakdown: Vin Diesel Revs His Way Back to #1

Vin Diesel’s come a long way in just a short amount of time.
Back in September, the action star’s last film, Babylon A.D, debuted to a disappointing $11.5 million and a 2nd place finish. Seven months later, he’s nearly septupled that amount.
Fast & Furious, the fourth installment of the racing series, pulled in a whopping $70.9 million over the last three days. That gross easily broke the 2009 record set by Monsters vs. Aliens just one week ago. The movie reunited the original’s four stars (Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster) and bested the debut of 2003’s 2 Fast and 2 Furious by over $20 million.
Friday’s only other wide screen release, Adventureland, opened in 6th place with $5.7 million in ticket sales.

Michael Moore Shifts Focus to Economy

What a difference a few months make.
Not surprisingly, the state of the economy has many people changing their plans these days…and that includes filmmaker Michael Moore. Earlier this summer, Paramount Vantage said the director would be producing a follow-up to 2004’s Fahrenheit 9/11. The movie, which was to have picked up chronologically where the last documentary left off, was originally supposed to tackle “what’s going on in the world, and America’s place in it.” Now it appears the sequel may get a slight shift in tone.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Michael’s project may now move from foreign policy to the financial crisis at home and abroad. That’s a subject matter that could dramatically change for Americans by the time the film is actually released. (It’s projected to debut in the spring.) It’s also a topic that some fear may be too pessimistic during an era of change. (Isn’t life supposed to get better during Barack’s time in office?)
But what Moore ultimately does with his currently-untitled film is still really anyone’s guess. I suppose it will just all depend on how our country is faring in the next few months…

Box Office Breakdown: Burn After Reading Smokes Past Competition

Around this same time last year, Tyler Perry was beating George Clooney in a battle at the box office. Now the Sexiest Man Alive is having his day.
This past weekend, cineplexes were kept busy with a handful of new releases. Although each film had a chance of reaching #1, Burn After Reading - starring Clooney, Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand - emerged as the eventual winner. But the news wasn’t so bad for the other three contenders. Theatergoers clearly starving for fresh material placed all four wide release entries into the chart’s four top slots.

Box Office Breakdown: Bangkok Dangerous Tops Dismal Weekend

Eek. And I thought a $14 million weekend was bad.
Seven days ago, Tropic Thunder reached the #1 spot despite an unimpressive box office turnout. This week, Bangkok Dangerous accomplished that same achievement—with only $7.7 million dollars.
While number crunchers weren’t expecting stellar numbers (kids are back in school, football’s back gone), the underwhelming response to Nicolas Cage‘s latest film was a bit surprising. Not only did the film industry have its worst weekend of 2008, Bangkok had the lowest take for any first-placed flick in five years. (Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star topped with $6.6 million in 2003.)

Box Office Breakdown: Tropic Thunder Makes It Three for Three

At any other time of the year, a $14 million take would probably get you a decent ranking in the Top Ten. This holiday weekend, that box office total was enough to put Tropic Thunder into first place. Again.
Despite a new Vin Diesel entry, the Ben Stiller comedy led the top of the pack for the third weekend in a row. (If it reaches that mark a fourth time, it will have officially reached Dark Knight territory.) Meanwhile, Babylon A.D. settled for second place with only $11.5 million in ticket sales. I’m guessing the sci fi film’s reviews - in particular, the one from the movie’s own director - might have had something to do with the disappointing turnout.
