Original Fame Director Speaks Out Against Remake

Maybe does live forever. Though the remake has premiered, some are still nostalgically looking to the past. One of the contributors to the original film project, Sir Alan Parker, has gone on record to speak out against the newly-remade movie.

Fame, which was released in 1980 and quickly became a classic, recently arrived in the UK. It was originally directed by Parker, who said that seeing the remake was “a bit like being mugged.” You see, apparently he was never consulted about the new version of the film, which Sir Alan sees as something of a slight. Calling the project “dreadful,” he says of the situation, “such are the realities of Hollywood manners and American copyright law.”

Kim Cattrall, sporting an upswept ‘do, wore a red Vivienne Westwood dress, while Kristin Davis was highly formal in Guy Laroche. Cynthia Nixon was daring in a glittering black gown.

UPDATE: ‘The Kite Runner’ Delayed Due to Controversial Scene

The Kite RunnerAs reported earlier, controversy surrounding a violent scene threatened the big-screen premiere of The Kite Runner.  The adaptation of the popular Khaled Hosseini novel will now be delayed six weeks.

The family of the young Afghan actor raped in the film wanted the segment removed because it would be considered culturally offensive.  They feared they would become victims of retaliation in their own country once the movie premiered.  The family claims 12-year-old Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada would never have participated in the production had they been given a script and/or advance warning of the scene.

Although director (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland) and the producers all insist Ahmad’s father was briefed on the situation, they have expressed concern for those involved.  In hopes of retaining the crucial scene—and because of increased violence in Kabul—Paramount Vantage is finalizing plans to temporarily move Ahmad and two other actors out of the country.  The movie, originally slated for a Nov. 2nd release, will now be released on Dec. 14th…. several days after the boys finish school.  It’s believed they may return sometime in March—after their summer vacation ends and the movie dust clears.  This decision appears to be something Ahmad’s father is comfortable with.

The movie’s new premiere date will now pit it against another highly-anticipated film, I Am Legend.

Casino Royale Premiers in Britain

Bond RoyaleThe new James Bond film, Casino Royale, premiered Tuesday in London to screaming fans and one particularly special lady – Queen Elizabeth II.  The screening took place at the annual Royal Film Performance, a fundraiser for performers’ charity the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, and an honor bestowed on only one other Bond film.  Based on Ian Fleming’s first Bond novel, Casino Royale will be the 21st film in the series and chronicles the life of James Bond before he became the dark, dashing, smooth-talking secret agent movie-goers know him to be.  This, of course, means that fans may have to get on without some of the high-tech gadgets and futuristic locales – this Bond will be beating bad guys in a world closer to our own.  This won’t be the first incarnation of the film, either: Casino Royale aired as a poorly received television adaptation in 1954, and later as a full-length comedy, spoofing Fleming’s novel and the Bond character in 1967.

Daniel Craig (Munich, The Jacket) will be the sixth man to fill the giant shoes and, while he may not seem perfect (a blond Bond?), some are calling him the best since Sean Connery.  Still, others are upset with the new choice, even going so far as to start an anti–Daniel Craig website.  We here at FilmCrunch think he’ll be just fine.  We certainly aren’t going to speculate about where he’ll sit with respect to the mighty Connery, but Craig looks like he can sturdily hold his own against any other Bond.  The only question now: can he hold his own against critics and hardcore fans?  Give him a chance – he may surprise you.  Look for Casino Royale in theaters November 17th.
