Wolverine Shows Up Other Comic-Con Guests

WolverineSan Diego is filled with costumed readers who delight in adventure and get a thrill from the works of Stan Lee. Scheduled appearances by stars like Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connolly, Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis made a big splash as Comic-Con, but it was the unscheduled appearance of that left everyone talking.

Jackman appeared in the crowd fresh off the Wolverine set and sporting stubble, but the audience ate it up. The actor bounded on stage to shake hands with Wolverine creator Len Wein to rousing applause, and even showed off a few clips from the upcoming prequel which will focus on his character’s story.  He thanked the 6,000 people in attendance for their devotion and is today the highlight of every paper.

In other words, look for the Wolverine movie to make a ton of money in the near future.

300 Sequel Planned

300 posterDeath, schmeath. If a sequel needs to be made, Hollywood is willing to overlook a few technicalities.

Although most of the characters in the epic were killed off, Legendary Pictures is going on with plans to produce a follow-up. How could that possibly happen? Good question. But that’s Frank Miller’s job to figure out. Miller, who wrote the original graphic novel the first movie was adapted from, could elect to craft a prequel to the 2007 smash.

Assuming he is pleased with the final concept, Zack Snyder does intend to helm the second installment. In the meantime, he still has to wrap production on . No target date for the next 300 saga has yet been announced.

Cloverfield Sequel Might Not Happen

CloverfieldAlthough Paramount was quick to greenlight a Cloverfield sequel back in January, the director of the original monster flick says plans are currently on hold. Smartly enough, the filmmakers (Matt Reeves, producer J.J. Abrams, writer Drew Goddard) have decided they’d like to wait until they actually come up with an interesting story.

While ideas for a sequel - or a prequel - have been tossed around, Reeves told SCI FI Wire that nothing has really stood out so far. “We’re still kind of toying with what it’s going to be and whether or not we’re going to find something that will be as exciting for us to make and, hopefully, for an audience to watch. So we’ll see. It’s really in the baby, baby stages. And right now it’s definitely on hold until we come up with what that would be.”

Well, whatever the trio eventually decides - the film better not have a shaky cam involved. Otherwise, they can simply count me out.

Will There Be a Departed Trilogy?

Is it possible to have too much of a good thing?

While we’ve grown accustomed to sequel news as of late (e.g. Indiana Jones, Rambo, Beverly Hills Cop), here’s something we haven’t heard a while: we might soon just see a follow-up to an actual Academy Award winner.

In interview with MTV, Mark Wahlberg confirms that Martin Scorsese (with screenwriter William Monahan) may be developing a sequel and a prequel for . While some may be surprised by this announcement, the idea is not completely far-fetched. The 2007 winner for Best Picture was a remake of Infernal Affairs, a Chinese movie that also spawned two other films.

Cast Additions for Wolverine

UPDATE:  Two more names have since been added to the bottom of the list.

Wolverine, Hugh JackmanBack in October, we reported that a spinoff of the X-Men series was in the works.  The prequel, , would explore the beginnings of Hugh Jackman’s storyline 17 years before the first movie took place.

Now four months later, we are getting a picture of how the rest of the cast is filling out.  It was originally rumored that would be playing a younger version of William Stryker (the role Brian Cox filled in X2).  That role actually belongs to (30 Days of Night).  But Schreiber will still have a presence in the film; he is now set to star as Victor Creed (a.k.a Sabretooth).

Here’s a list of the actors currently joining slated to join Jackman:

  • Lynn Collins (The Number 23):  Kayla Silverfox
  • Danny Huston (The Kingdom): William Stryker
  • Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) Gambit
  • Ryan Reynolds (Definitely, Maybe): Deadpool

The film is still scheduled for a May 1, 2009 release.

Star Trek Movie Delayed Until Next Year

Star Trek LogoWell, it looks like we’re going to have to wait a little longer to beam anyone up.

Those who made it out to see Cloverfield in the past few weeks got a sneak peek at another J.J. Abrams production: .  (If you haven’t seen the clip yet, you can view it after the jump.) Unfortunately, a major part of that trailer is now no longer true.

The highly-anticipated prequel/sequel was slated to be released ‘Christmas 2008’.  What it should have said was ‘December....Give Or Take a Few Months.’

According to Variety, the movie’s premiere will remain ‘under construction’ until May 8, 2009.

The film was simply part of a major reshuffling in ’s calendar.  In most cases, a changed date usually signals bad news; that’s not the case with Trek.  In fact, the studio believes the movie will benefit from this shift.

Actors involved in the next installment include Tyler Perry, , Zoe Saldana, Eric Bana, and Leonard Nimoy.

‘Angels & Demons’ Set February Start

Tom Hanks and Ron HowardYes, there were a couple things about the movie version of Dan Brown’s controversial and critically acclaimed novel The Da Vinci Code that didn’t quite match up, but does that mean it wasn’t a good movie? Yeah, looked kind of dumb with long hair, and his Boston accent was kind of lame, but it still wasn’t a bad film. That said, we should all be glad that Akiva Goldsman is working over time on the script for the film’s sequel (and novel’s prequel), Angels & Demons, to get it done before that pesky writer’s strike.

will return to direct the sequel which will begin filming in February under the banner. And yes, for those of you who are dying to know, Tom Hanks and his academic mullet will be back as well.

‘Wolverine’ To Hit Theaters In 2009

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in X-MenFanboys everywhere are squealing with glee as announces that they have set a date for the eagerly awaited and horribly titled X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The film will hit theaters on May 1, 2009 and, of course, star as Marvel’s short-tempered, adamantium-clawed mutant. In addition to release date excitement, Variety reports that is in talks to play a younger version of William Stryker, Wolverine’s nemesis who was played by in X2.

What excites me? Rumors that the film (to be directed by Tsotsi’s Gavin Hood), which will be partially filmed in New Orleans, will include the previously left out X-man, Gambit. If I had a dollar for every playing card I lost/ruined by imitating the cartoon version of the Cajun mutant, I’d be freakin’ rich.

A few other new mutants (as well as returning ones) are expected to make appearances. Fox is also trying to get the origin story of villain Magneto off the ground and into theaters.

Wes Anderson’s ‘Hotel Chevalier’ Free on iTunes

Hotel Chevalier balconyA 13-minute prequel to Wes Anderson’s new film, The Darjeeling Limited, has just become available as a free download on iTunes. The short film, entitled Hotel Chevalier, has been released over the internet in what seems to be a cross-promotional move by Anderson, who screened the short on the festival circuit but will not include it with the theatrical release. It appears to be a precursor to the situation which Jason Schwartzman’s character finds himself in at the beginning of Darjeeling. Knowing Wes Anderson, however, the two could have little to no relation at all.

The short involves Schwartzman and Natalie Portman as two former lovers in an uncomfortable first encounter after an apparent falling-out. As an added bonus, the two share a steamy moment in which Portman removes all of her clothes and mounts Schwartzman on a hotel bed; sadly, to the chagrin of many a fanboy, the sly camera work leaves much to the imagination. But Hotel Chevalier is classic Anderson—humorous, charming and unabashedly awkward. Look for The Darjeeling Limited in limited release this weekend—if you can bear to watch a post-trauma Owen Wilson, that is.
