Diego Luna Prepares for Directorial Debut

Milk actor Diego Luna is set to make his directorial debut with Abel.
The family drama will be produced by Canana Films (company Luna started with best friend and fellow thespian Gael García Bernal) and co-produced by John Malkovich‘s Mr. Mudd production company.
Luna’s Just Walking co-star Jose Maria Yazpik is set to star in the film, which is told from a child’s perspective.
No word yet on a release date.

Court Date Set for Watchmen Lawsuit

While most Watchmen fans only had the film’s release countdown to consider, a new development in the Watchmen copyright lawsuit has added a new date to watch out for: January 6.
U.S. District Court Judge Gary Allen Feess assigned the date for the case, which is set to decide whether or not Fox does hold the rights to the Watchmen movie. Between the January 6 court date and the film’s scheduled March 6 release, let’s hope that things go in the fans’ favor and they settle this between that time.
If the case goes according to Fox, fans of the highly-anticipated Zack Snyder film will never see that March 6 release happen, which could very well happen come January.
The dispute goes back to 1991, when Fox “quitclaimed” its right to Alan Moore‘s acclaimed graphic novel to Largo Entertainment, with an agreement that the production company was to release the movie under the big studio (if not, Largo Entertainment was to buy the rights through an agreed buyout formula from Fox).

Director Sydney Pollack Passes Away at 73

Sydney Pollack, the award-winning director behind 1985’s Out of Africa, died today at his California home. The 73-year-old, who was also a well-known producer and actor, had been suffering from cancer.
In addition to his work on Africa, Pollack will most likely be remembered for 1973’s The Way We Were and 1982’s Tootsie. In total, his projects have earned 48 Oscar nominations and two Academy Award wins for himself. He was last behind the camera in 2005 when he helmed Sketches of Frank Gehry and The Interpreter, starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn.
Sydney’s skills, as mentioned, were often spotted on-screen as well. In addition to Tootsie, his mug was seen in Death Becomes Her, Eyes Wide Shut and Changing Lanes. His most recent appearances were made in last year’s Michael Clayton and the romantic comedy Made of Honor (still in theaters).
Pollack - whose son died in a 1993 plane crash - is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Shriek! More Shreks to Come

Although many people have equated the latest Shrek incarnation to tired rehash, I surprisingly enjoyed it despite my expectations. I thought it still managed to inject some original adult humor while being enjoyably light and breezy. But having said all that, I did also tell my FilmCrunch partner, Neil Estep, that the series could go no further. All possible storylines had officially been exhausted. Or so I thought…
Producer Jeffrey Katzenberg recently announced to a crowd in Germany that fans should be expecting a fourth movie. Additionally, we learned that Shrek television holiday special will be created to help complete the deterioration of the series. NOTE TO KATZENBERG: I vaguely remember my husband showing me a very poor quality version of the 1978 Star Wars holiday special…and let me assure you, that did not hold up years later.
For those wondering (as I was) what the next ogre installment could possibly be about, Shrek will apparently be dealing with something from his past. I’m going to take a guess and say that he was hesistant about becoming a dad in the third film because he had secretly fathered other ogres in Far, Far Away. Now that could give me an interesting enough reason to come back for more…
