Yes, you unfortunately read that title correctly: MTV is seriously planning to remake the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
While I cannot deny how popular musicals have become (i.e. Mamma Mia!, High School Musical, Hairspray), are there not already tons of other musicals to tamper with other than this one? Can producers possibly more cold-hearted than I thought?
On the upside (yes, there’s actually an upside) to this, the executive producer of the original, Lou Adler, is attached to the project, along with BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios. They also plan on using the original screenplay (thankfully!); however, they may incorporate songs not included in the original (what?).

Red Dawn Scheduled for Remake

Almost 25 years after it was originally released, it’s been announced that Red Dawn is now up for the inevitable remake. Wolverines!
In 1984, the Cold War era movie - the first movie to be rated PG-13 - saw a group of high schoolers head for the woods after the Soviets and Cubans invaded America. With the weapons they had stockpiled, the teens did their best to wreak havoc on the foreign troops. (You can read my review of the Red Dawn Collector’s Edition here.)
Believing there’s no better time to revisit a story about an invasion on U.S. soil, MGM has greenlighted an update of its cult classic.

Trailer for The Day The Earth Stood Still

In The Day the Earth Stood Still, Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth with a robot companion. The two have a warning to deliver to the world’s leaders.
Those familiar with the 1951 original should know this remake will come with a slightly different message. In an interview with MTV, Reeves said, “The version I was just working on, instead of being man against man, it’s more about man against nature. My Klaatu says that if the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth survives. I’m a friend to the earth.”
Earth - also starring Jennifer Connelly, Jaden Smith and Jon Hamm - lands in theaters on December 12.
My Fair Lady: One Remake Over the Line?

There is a certain merit in re-introducing young generations to the classics, in keeping with the times and re-inventing the old to make it seem young and fresh again. But at some point, some where, is there a line which can be crossed? Are some things not already so perfect, so pristine and so well-done that they manage to stand the test of time? Aren’t there some things which no one could possibly ever re-create? It’s true the Sistine Chapel has looked the exact same way since 1512...yet no one could really consider re-vamping this most famous ceiling so that it has a much more modern appeal. Buckingham Palace famously houses a queen, and yet no major changes have been made to this edifice in her entire eighty-two year lifespan. Some things are made to stand alone. Just don’t try telling that to Hollywood...or lazy scriptwriters.

Keira Knightley Signs on to Fair Lady Remake

Sexy, sophisticated Atonement star Keira Knightley has already began attending singing lessons to prepare for her role in the upcoming My Fair Lady remake.
Producers Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Duncan Kenworthy (Notting Hill, Love Actually) are more than excited over Knightley inking the deal, as she was their ideal actress for Audrey Hepburn’s famous role. The pair are crossing their fingers to get their other ideal actor, Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, on board to play opposite of Knightley. While the thought of the There Will Be Blood star taking on a musical role sounds unheard of, the fact that he currently is considering a movie version of Nine with Nicole Kidman says otherwise. That would be an adorable pairing, no?

Despite arresting visuals and a $120 million budget, the Wachowski brothers were unable to bring Speed Racer to life. The Warner Bros. movie - which many had already predicted would fall behind Iron Man - did even worse than originally thought. At one point, it was believed the anime adaptation would debut in 2nd place. Unfortunately, the final box office numbers placed the PG film in third.
Meanwhile, What Happens in Vegas became the second wedding-themed entry in the recent Top Ten. The comedy, starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher, replaced Made of Honor as the go to ‘chick flick’ of the week. The movie grossed $20.1 million, a slim $1.6 million more than Speed.

Where exactly can the summer box office go from here?
This past weekend, Iron Man blasted into theaters in a big way. The comic book adaptation raked in a whopping $102 million putting an $87 million difference between itself and its nearest competitor. The PG-13 film officially became the 10th best opener of all time and had the second best premiere for any non-sequel. (Spider-Man grossed $114.8 million back in 2002.)

While I think this trailer for The Incredible Hulk is definitely an improvement over the earlier version, I still don’t think there’s anything they could do to make that green guy look less cheesy.
And am I the only one who thinks they they should have kept that other ugly thing under wraps?
Edward Norton’s version of The Incredible Hulk storms into theaters on June 13.
Get a Look at Land of the Lost

Back in February, we told you about a planned remake of the ‘70s series, Land of the Lost. The comedy, starring Will Ferrell, would give a modern update to the mysterious land filled with dinosaurs and things called Pakuni.
While the recreation will not have any kids (they’ve been replaced by two adult companions), other elements of the original show will remain as true as possible. In the picture above, you can see director Brad Silberling’s (Lemony Snicket) version of the classic Sleestaks. The lizard creatures - which won’t be products of CGI - will come with slightly enhanced features. Instead of being armed with crossbows, the green guys will be able to draw quills from their spines.
Production on the Universal project is currently underway.

Although 30 Rock still struggles to compete on Thursdays, Tina Fey’s Baby Mama had no problem topping the competition. The film, co-starring Amy Poehler, earned $17.4 million and made a showing for women everywhere. When’s the last time a movie with two female leads debuted at #1?
Interestingly enough, Mama‘s screen average ($6845) was outdone by another female-centric movie: The She Found Me. The movie that was directed and written by star Helen Hunt earned $8066 per screen this weekend. Fairly impressive considering Found, also featuring Bette Midler, opened in 44th place.
Friday’s other big entry - Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay - came in second place with a $14.9 million take. Surprisingly, that gross nearly equals what the original film raked in during it’s total run.
