Zack Snyder, the director behind 300 and Watchmen, has been tapped to helm Warner Bros.’ upcoming remake of Superman.
Snyder, who most recently directed Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, will work with producer Christopher Nolan on the project. His name was chosen from a field of contenders that included Matt Reeves, Darren Aronofsky, Tony Scott and Ben Affleck.
The story – as Nolan hinted earlier this summer – will have close ties to the Richard Donner versions. General Zod will reportedly be included in the script by David Goyer (Batman Begins).
No casting decisions have yet been announced. Production on the film should begin by next year.

Christopher Nolan Inspired by Classic Superman Film

Director Christopher Nolan is seeking inspiration from the 1978 Superman film.
Nolan, who is producing the upcoming Superman remake alongside his brother Jonah Nolan and David S. Goyer, revealed he aspires to achieve the same success as filmmaker Richard Donner did in the very first adaptation of the comic book story.
“I was hugely struck by the Donner films in the ‘70s when I was a kid. In 1978 I saw Superman and it had such an epic scope to it. It took on this incredible, iconic figure and gave that iconic figure an appropriate framing. It made quite an impression on me. It’s definitely one of my childhood touchstones on what epic cinema can be.”

The Crow: A remake that was announced back in December 2008 is finally starting to take shape. Shooting on The Crow, a new adaptation of the comic book tale, should begin later this year. In the 1994 film version, actor Brandon Lee - who was tragically killed as the result of an accidental shooting on set - played the deceased man who comes back to avenge his fiancee’s death. Director Stephen Norrington’s script will feature new backdrops and a different form for the title character. “The Crow itself is a creature in this movie — it’s not just a bird,” producer Edward Pressman told MTV. “It’s got a personality and a character. Not like Godzilla exactly, but it’s very different [and has] a more active role in the story.”

The film, which will not be a sequel to the 1998 version starring Matthew Broderick, will “pay respects” to the 1954 outing. A director has not yet been named.

Speedy Gonzales: George Lopez has already voiced a chihuahua, so it’s only logical he would take on Mexico’s fastest mouse next. The comedian is now set to lead a live-action/CG hybrid version of Speedy Gonzales, the famous animated series from the 1950’s. Although the cartoon’s depictions have been labeled racist in recent years, Ann Lopez, George’s wife/producing partner, promises the storyline will be updated for the times. “Speedy’s going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do,” she explained. “He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.”

Laverne & Shirley: File this in the “Was He Kidding?” file. During a recent red carpet event for Valentine’s Day, director Garry Marshall said he may bring Laverne & Shirley to the big screen—with Jessica Biel and Jennifer Garner in the lead roles. “We’re gonna work on that,” the original show’s co-creator stated. “My sister Penny and Cindy are gonna have a guest cameo. They’re gonna walk “schlemiel, schlemazel”—or they’re gonna get tired in the middle and sit down.”

In the actioner, Momoa, as the title character, would avenge the deaths of his father and tribe. (It’s a role Twilight‘s Kellan Lutz was also vying for.) Filming will begin this March in Bulgaria.
